Lot 2352    

Confederacy, Lexington, S.C., cds with manuscript date "Apr. 6" ties 1863-64 10¢ blue on small 1864 cover to Richmond, Va., Addressed to "Mr. A. J. Boatwright, Company K, 13th Regt S C V, McGowan's Brigade", enclosure is an "April Fool" letter on embossed paper to a "Southern Soldier", minor toning, Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Azariah J. Boatwright was a Private in Company K, 13th Reg't S.C.V. He enlisted on Sept. 3, 1861 in Lexington, S.C. for the duration of the war. He was wounded at Gettysburg and captured on July 5th 1863. On July 17th 1863 he was sent to DeCamp Gen'l Hospital, on David's Island in New York Harbor. He was paroled and exchanged on Aug. 31, 1863. He was again captured on March 31, 1865 at Hatcher's Run, held at Point Lookout, VA and then released on June 24, 1865.

Confederacy, Liberty Hill, S.C., three different covers, all with dateless postmark, included is stampless with 31mm brown cds and matching "Paid 5" in circle to Cokesbury, S.C.; stampless to Charleston, S.C. with "Paid 10" in double circle; and last is cover franked with 1863-64 10¢ blue (12) tied by circular postmark to Newton, Ga., small cover flaws, F.-V.F (Stets & Teal Rarity 6/7), ex-Cantey, Kohn, Oswald.

Confederacy, Manchester, S.C., manuscript postmark on six covers; one with matching "Paid 5" (folded letter with slave content), a 1863 folded letter with "Paid 10" (letter regarding money for New Orleans Refugees), 1861 postmark with "Due 5" rating (slight soiling and missing backflap), fresh cover to Charleston, S.C. franked with pen canceled 1863, 10¢ milky blue (11a), a similar franking on reverse of turned cover with initial usage a 1861, 10¢ blue (2, portions torn off), also includes incoming folded letter franked with large margin 1863, 10¢ milky blue (12a) tied by blue Columbia, S.C. cds, with interesting letter, F.-V.F. or better.
