Great Britain, "V R" Official, 1840, Queen Victoria, 1d black, Pos. NJ, cancelled with reduced red Maltese Cross used for obliteration trials, four ample to large margins, tiny surface scuff in margin at top right (not mentioned on clear certificate), Very Fine; with 2002 R.P.S.L. certificate. SG No. V1 £22,500 ($28,350).

THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL THE 1D BLACKS AND BY FAR THE RAREST OF USAGES FROM THIS ISSUE. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT PHILATELIC ITEM.

Experimental trial on postmarks and ink were carried out by Rowland Hill after which attempts were made to remove the cancellations by means of chemical agents. A single sheet was cut up and used by hill and only a handful have survived.
