Mexico, Mazatlan 1861, 8r green on red brown, neat Mazatlan boxed date stamp cancel (Schatzkes 739), large to huge margins, natural paper fold, Extremely Fine and choice, a very rare stamp with only 220 issued (NF $1,500), a similar example sold in our sale of the collection of Dr. Manuel Iglesias (Sale #114, Lot #402) for $2,100 hammer; with 2002 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.

The 8r Black on Green were printed in parallel to the 8r Black on Brown to combat the illegal use of splits from six larger districts and sent only to those. However, at the end of the issue, with the central post office in disarray, the small balance of the 8r Green stamps on hand was sent in small amounts to 16 other districts including Mazatlan. All those are rarities.

Mexico, Mexico, 1861, 1r black on green, tied by Mexico cds on lined lined rare diplomatic wrapper band to Paris, France paying the printed matter rate for 2 pounds (probably contained newspapers), Mexican French Delegation cachet handstamp, backstamped with "Mexique-Tampico May 1863" transit date stamp, rated "2f 40c" and "16" (indicating 16 times the 16 times the 15c per ounce rate); light soiling, still Very Fine; with 2024 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.

A UNIQUE BISECT AND STAGECOACH USAGE FROM MEXICO CITY.

This is one of the only two splits covers known from Mexico district (the other has an 8r quadrisect). Both have diligencias cancels as Mexico district never had scarcity of stamps. It is possible that both may be postal frauds. A unique and beautiful cover.
