Philadelphia, Pa., Aug 28, 1861, cds and matching grid handstamp canceling 1861, 1¢ blue (63) on cover to Scranton, Pa., with 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) tied by "Old Stamps, Not Recognized" two-line handstamp with matching "Due 3" handstamp below; 3¢ stamp has been replaced with portion of tying handstamp painted in, Very Fine appearance, still a rare early carrier and demonetization usage and a very early usage of the 1861 1¢ issue (early known on cover usage is August 21st), featured in Milgram's Demonetization article in the American Stamp Dealer & Collector (October 2015).

New York, Sep 24, 1861, cds and grid duplex tying 1861, 3¢ pink + 1857, 1¢ blue, type V (64+24) on cover Hackensack, N.J., reverse with "New York, Sep 18" cds and grid duplex, original enclosure with interesting content…How is Hackensack & the Hackensakers. I hope they will give no future occasion for the visit of a United States Marshall. The Union men up there must put down Secessionism, if not peaceably then by force…P.S. The new stamps are out today. I got some & you will have one on your letter.; both stamps with s.e. at left, F.-V.F., a very early mixed issue franking from New York, featured in Milgram's Demonetization article in the American Stamp Dealer & Collector (October 2015).
