In Memory of the S.(outhern) C.(onfederacy), red and blue design showing Confederate Flag, Viper & Hanging Noose, on soldier's letter endorsed cover to South Alton, N.H., "New Orleans, La., May 30, 1863" cds with matching "3" rate handstamp, original enclosure with Liberty & Flag patriotic letterhead datelined Camp at Baton Rouge, March 28th, 1863, with interesting content including the grounding of the U.S.S. Planter…Daniel Coffin is well, and has not lost his stripes, he was wrecked aboard the Planter containing all our camp stoves and kettles and considerable other baggage all lost. They were wrecked on one of the Bahama Islands called the Wrecker's Island. The men got ashore and were saved., mentions marching to rebel stronghold at Port Hudson including…the morning of the 15th we marched back about 6 miles at a pontoon bridge to cut off the enemy who were trying to get to the bridge and prevent us getting across when we should have to retreat but we thwarted them, one night while we staid there, we heard the gun boat Mississippi blow up. There were considerable many lives lost.; some soiling and staining, Fine.Estimate $300 - 400.
USS Planter was a steamer taken over by Robert Smalls, a Southern slave and ship's pilot who steered the ship past Confederate defenses and surrendered it to Union Navy forces on 13 May 1862 during the American Civil War. The Planter latter was converted into a gunboat served the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron.

Naval Engagement Off Fort Wright, large gun boat battle scene design on cover to Sandusky, O., franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Lebanon, Ky., Oct 30" cds, with original enclosure with Waving Flag design letterhead datelined "Perrysville, Ky., Oct 17th, 1862", with interesting content regarding death of Captain…the boys of his company say the last they heard him say was "Now do your duty boys" and was just waving his sword when a ball struck him in the breast over his heart. He staggered back, and only said, "Carry me off boys" and died at once., other details of wounded and dead soldiers…They lay so thick both our men and Rebels all mixed up together., etc.; small stamp flaws and repaired cover nick at lower right, F.-V.F.Estimate $300 - 400.
