Low to family regarding new prospectors coming to the gold fields in part…Notwithstanding the experience and disappointment of last season hundreds and thousands are arriving at these mines with just as unreasonable expectations as ever only to be disappointed and discouraged & return disgusted with the Country. They come here without a penny, to make their "pile" and return in autumn laden with dust, vain hope! The gold is these mines is in the quartz rock mostly (I sent you & Father Whiting specimens of both kinds last fall) which it requires time and capital to raise and crush before ti can be made available, the quantity of gold bearing quartz here is almost inexhaustible, its quality or richness has not fur want of machines been fully tested. Most people say they "know it will pay big" but they do not know as yet. I have prospected this rock as much as anyone here and I do not know, but my faith is pretty strong that it will pay if properly worked., Very Fine, this being the earliest of five letters known from the Nebraska Territory section of Colorado.Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.

AN EXCEPTIONAL USAGE AND A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE BRITISH POSTAL AGENCY'S NEW YORK DATESTAMP ON A COVER FROM NORTH CAROLINA TO JAMAICA.
Apparently there was no ship leaving from Baltimore to Jamaica, so it was sent to New York. It was placed in a letter bag at Gilpin's Exchange, where the British packet agent collected the letter and delivered the mail bag to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. steamer "Clyde" on the first mail voyage of that ship from New York to Havana, where it was transferred to the RMSP Co. steamer "Dee". It was transferred again at Turks Island to the RMSP Co. steamer "Tweed" and arrived in Kingston on April 13 1852.
Upon arrival in Jamaica, a clerk marked the letter for 1s6d postage due, but the Jamaican agent paid only the packet rate and held the letter until the next visit by the recipient, saving the Jamaican inland postage.
