Scott No. 114    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

AN EXCELLENT STRIKE OF THE UNION MILLS "KKK", SKULL AND CROSSBONES FANCY CANCEL.

During the 1869-1871 period, Union Mills, Pennsylvania, produced several notable fancy cancel designs, including the "KKK" Skull & Crossbones, two variations of the Kleagle Mask, and the Horse in Hat motif. These distinctive cancellations suggest the presence of Ku Klux Klan activity in this western Pennsylvania town during the early years of Reconstruction. John H. Beardsley served briefly as postmaster - from February 9, 1870, to March 16, 1871 - a tenure that aligns with the creation and use of these controversial cancellations.
