(Salem N.C. to Jamaica), "JAMAICA/SHIP LETTER". (1847), bold strike of two line handstamp on folded letter to May Hill, Jamaica, postmarked red "Salem N.C. Apr 17" (1847) cds with three strikes of matching "PAID" handstamp and "12" rate (including 2¢ ship fee charged in error), Holland correspondence, endorsed "Via Baltimore or Philadelphia", manuscript 10d due with "Kingston JU 3 1847" backstamp, Very Fine and choice, a lovely cover & usage, ex-R. Winter.

Lot 1761    

Ship Mail, 1790-1870 (The Richard Winter Collection), a fascinating accumulation Ship mail to and from the United States, there are 114 stampless covers with various different "SHIP" markings and usages, countries of origin include England, France, Germany, Mexico, Cuba, Netherlands, Italy, United States, most are transatlantic usages, generally in Fine-Very Fine condition, all with Dick Winter's notes, an outstanding group for further study.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

United States-France Transatlantic Mail, 1805-1874 (The Richard Winter Collection), small study group of 34 folded covers from France to the United States and from United States to France, many with Dick Winter's notes, a wide variety of markings and rates are present, a nice lot worth inspection.

United States to Switzerland Transatlantic Mail, 1857-1859 (The Richard Winter Collection), interesting lot of 11 unpaid folded covers from New York to Switzerland, all with New York debit cds, French transit markings, Swiss due and arrival markings, a nice little group.

Lot 1764    

The Richard Winter Collection of North Carolina Transatlantic Mails, one binder 31 covers (mostly stampless) all neatly written up on exhibition pages which includes Dick's first Transatlantic cover (although not from North Carolina), This envelope was the first stampless transatlantic cover in my collection. The intrigue with the transit markings on this cover launched a lifetime of study of transatlantic mails., the collection includes both incoming and outbound covers to and from North Carolina, overall Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.
