Lot 166    

Ecuador, 1865, 1r ochre, small pre-use wrinkle, tied by red fancy "PI" in star handstamp on wrapper to Portoviejo, with matching "Guayaquil, Franca, Feb 6, 73" cds alongside; cover with some insect erosion across cover, F.-V.F., this being one of five known examples of the "PI" star cancellation from Guayaquil.
Scott No. 3    Estimate $500 - 750.

This cancellation has always been attributed solely to Quito. Of the known examples from Guayaquil, two are in the National Museum in Washington. Contemporary uses from Santa Elena and later Tusa are known.

Lot 167    

Ecuador, 1865, 1r dull buff, margins mostly large to just into frameline at lower left, fine impression, tied by "3154" dotted lozenge handstamp on folded letter from Santa Rosa (a small town south east of Guayaquil), with matching "Guayaquil, Feb 1, 65" cds alongside, Very Fine, one of at least two known usages of the "3154" cancel used in Guayaquil on this day, this cancel was later used in Quito from July 1870; with 2001 Moorhouse certificate.

Lot 168    

Ecuador, 1865, 1r orange buff, diagonal bisect, lower right portion of stamp tied across bisect by neat "Babahoya, Dec 2, 67" cds on folded letter addressed to Juan Jose Flores, President of Ecuador in Quito, Very Fine and choice, a very rare 1r buff bisect usage from the small town of Babahoya.
Scott No. 3 var.    Estimate $500 - 750.

Due to a shortage of the ½r denomination at the end of 1867, bisect usages were required to meet the demand.

Ecuador, 1865, 1r light bistre, two singles, in combination with 1865, ½r blue (2), all with full margins and fine impressions, tied by three neat strikes of "Latacunga" provisional boxed handstamps on wrapper front to Ambato, red crayon "5oz" weight notation, Very Fine.
Scott No. 3    Estimate $400 - 600.

This Latacunga pre-adhesive postmark was used during the first half of 1865, fewer than ten recorded usages of this provisional handstamp used as a cancelling device.

Ecuador, 1865, 1r orange buff, in combination 1865, ½r blue (2), both with early fine impressions, on wrapper to Guaranda, tied by manuscript "Riobba" cancel of Riobamba, manuscript "2½oz" weight notation, Very Fine and choice.

The Riobamba manuscript cancel was used in early 1865, prior to the advent of the canceling devices.
