Lot 621

(Calaveras) Mokulumne Hill, Cal., black cds with several strikes of waffle grid killer on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire (U10) additional franked with two single 1857 12¢ black adhesives (36), potentially replaced (read below) and vertical pair of 1857 10¢ green, type V (35) to Santa Margheritta, Sardinia, Italy; the adhesive stamps are applied over the top of a Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank with the envelope apparently being used without carriage by Wells, Fargo & Co.; black straight line "OVERLAND" handstamp (Type 2) applied in San Francisco; total 47¢ postage overpaying the 42c rate to Sardinia via Prussia; various other markings include red italic "19" (credit from New York to Prussia, which included 12¢ postage beyond the German Austrian Postal Union); manuscript "f3¾" indicates the foreign postage in silbergroschen; probably carried on the last voyage of the North Atlantic Steamship Company Adriatic, which sailed Oct 6, 1860 and arrived in Southampton on Oct 17; with a total of seven (7) various backstamps and forwarding markings on verso; 2000 P.F. certificate states "It is a genuine usage, the right 12c stamp with a tear at bottom, and the entire with a repaired spindle hole at left"; however, a June, 2011 article in Western Express, co-authored by Richard Frajola and Michael Perlman (cover census SFC2-1) notes that "clean PFC but two 12¢ replaced"; therefore sold AS IS, Very Fine appearance, a rare example of an "Overland" handstamped cover mailed to Sardinia, Italy.
