(Yuba) Oregon House, Cal., black manuscript postmark on yellow cover to Pennsylvania, franked with manuscript cancelled 1861 green (68, small defects), with original contents datelined "Oregon House, Yuba Co., Cal. October 27, 1862" and reads, in part, "…Washoe is going to be one of the richest parts to the U.S. They will take out twenty million dollars of Gold & silver this year…J.H. Atchison went there over three years ago and made one hundred thousand dollars clear…We have to pay some more for certain kinds of goods now that formerly, otherwise we would never know that war was raging in the Eastern States. Everything is peaceable and quiet here this state is strong union. We beat the Secessionists more than three to one this fall at the Election. Cal. is anxious to raise a regimen or a half a dozen of them to fight the rebels. This state raised five regiments last fall to garrison the Forts on this coast. About 1500 of them went to Texas. They went overland and have cleaned out the rebels clear to the western bounds of Texas. Oregon and Nevada territory have also voted strong union, so you see there is no danger on this side. The only danger we fear is a foreign war…if it was not for the Privateers on the Ocean I would come…If I hear the rebel privateer "Alabama" is captured I think it is likely I will come…Orrin Stewart", Very Fine, a great letter and a rare manuscript California postmark.
