Gregory's Express, large red two line handstamp (GRE-101) on "Dec 16, 1851" folded letter from Sacramento to San Francisco, red "Paid" double oval handstamp (GRE-111) at right; light horizontal filefold, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Joseph W. Gregory operated his express from Feb, 1850 to May 1, 1853, being one of the earliest expressmen in California. His early straight line handstamps are known in red, blue and black.

Gregory's Express, two folded covers from Scotland with Gregory's Express markings from the Daniel Gibb correspondence to San Francisco, both with black four-line company handstamp "Gregory's Atlantic and Pacific, Express, Forwarded by Thompson & Hitchcock, 149 Pearl Street, N.Y." (Thomas GRE-123), basically identical however one without the "NY" in handstamp (Thomas GRE-122), one with complete contents & other outer lettersheet only, some faults, Fine and scarce.

Gregory's Express Office, Marysville, blue three-line company handstamp (GRE-117) with matching blue "Not Paid" (GRE-108) with manuscript "50" (express fee due) beneath on buff cover to San Jose, Cal., Very Fine and choice, one of only two examples known, with only one reported in Thomas' book.

Gregory's New York & California Express, sharp strike of blue company serrated oval (GRE-128) with matching "NOT PAID" handstamp (also noted in Thomas' as GRE-128) on outer lettersheet to San Francisco; two light vert. file folds affecting markings, missing bottom flap, Very Fine and choice, a very rare Gregory's marking, the first marking used at Sacramento.

Pr Gregory's Express pr Nicaragua Route, manuscript sender's directive on buff cover to New Bedford, with manuscript "paid" and handstamp "1" (cent drop rate in New Bedford); docketing on front indicates "Feby 14, 1852"; ink erosion spot in left margin, some corner wear and abrasion, missing part of backflap, F.-V.F., west to east express cover carried by Gregory's Express.

Gregory's Express Pocket Letter Book, small, 3" x 4¾" "Gregory's Express Pocket Letter Book" with 20 pages of faintly lined paper and cover printed in gold on glossy black, USED with all pages filled with original text, as written up by Dr. Milgram in the March, 2020 issue of Western Express, the contents begin with an entry datelined "Sacramento May 11, 1851" with details of the writer's mining adventures and hard work, great fires in San Francisco, Stockton & Nevada City, signed Geo W. Moore; light wear as one would expect from a used example of one of these letterbooks, Very Fine for this, a rare used example of Gregory's Express letterbooks., this is the subject of an article for the Western Express (March 2020) by Dr. Milgram.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The booklet is "Designed to facilitate correspondence between cities and towns, and the mining districts in California, and all parts of the United States" and "which, with the envelope, will not exceed the weight of a single letter". The inside and back covers list Gregory's locations, services and newspaper endorsements.
