Lot 1117    

Challis, IT, Challis May 14 79, black circular handstamp with negative lettering "Challis IT", the postmaster must have felt it not clear enough as he then wrote in manuscript within the marking "Challis May 14 79" with matching segmented cork killer on 1¢ postal card addressed to Salmon City with business contents signed J.M. Sharp, Very Fine and rare, Consignor notes "may be unique." Certainly early and rare.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Challis was founded in 1878 and named for A.P. Challis, who was a surveyor when the townsite was laid out. Challis post office was established in 1878.

Wapello Iowa Tery, Mar 20 (1841), black rimless circle cds with manuscript rate marking ""Paid 10" "on stampless folded letter to Burlington, Iowa with legal/land contents and signed/dated "Burlington this 4th day of March 1841", minor file fold through cds, still, Very Fine and choice, A rare early Iowa Territorial cover with unusual rimless circle handstamp. Consignor's notes indicate "Only Known Example."
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Iowa Territory was formed July 4, 1838 and existed for a little over six years, with statehood being achieved Dec 28, 1846.

Westpoint IT Jan 23 (1846), bold black straight-line postmark with manuscript date and matching "10" rate on single-page folded letter to Ohio, datelined "Jan 23 1846" with business contents; minor wrinkles, Very Fine and rare, Possibly unique example of this straight line Iowa Territorial marking.

Atchison, Kas. Mar 7 '66., blue double circle postmark with target killer tying 1861 3¢ rose (65, tiny perf tear) to grayish overall shaded ad cover of "Butterfield Overland Despatch Co" noting "To All points Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Montana Territories" with principal offices "Atchison, Kansas" and several others, addressed to New York; slightly reduced at right, Very Fine and attractive, a lovely item and a very rare Butterfield Overland Despatch Company design.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

In 1865-66, David A. Butterfield operated this Overland Despatch between Denver, Colorado Territory and Atchison, Kansas.

Fort Leavenworth, July 5/57, manuscript postmark on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Virginia, some light corner wear, Very Fine, only three covers are recorded with this very late use of the manuscript postmark without state designation, ex-Alexander.

Kansas Postmark Group, small lot of 11 covers all with various Kansas postmarks, most are franked with 1857 3¢ with territorial postmark, towns included Doniphan, Emporia, Fort Leavenworth with numeral "5" tying 1861 3¢, Fort Scott, Huron manuscript, Lawrence, Leavenworth City, Olathe, Osgood manuscript, Topeka, Troy manuscript, few minor faults, generally F.-V.F.

Leavenworth, K.T., blurry strike of cds ties 1857 3¢ dull red (26, creased) on cover to Massachusetts, flap torn, included is lengthy letter written by Pikes Peak Miner en route which is datelined "Lawrence, K.T. May 8th, 1859" and written over the next couple of days, excellent contents which talks of violent weather, mines and outfitting a team as well as daily life, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Manhattan, Kas. Nov 12, two strikes of small cds including one tying 1857 3¢ dull red on cover to New York, forwarded with "New-York Nov 22 1860" cds and barred killer on second 3¢ 1857 adhesive for forwarding postage to Boston; enclosed letter datelined "Bluemont, Nov 4, 1860" with contents, in part, "…We are having good religious times in Kansas to make up for temporal lass. Next Tuesday is our Territorial election comes off & also the Presidential for all the Nation. The Lord guide the hearts & the hands to vote right on that important day." from one brother to another; trimmed slightly at right just taking off a few perfs from the right-hand adhesive, still Very Fine.
