The J.S. and E.A. Abbott Company was a historical iteration of a famous carriage and wagon manufacturer. Initially, J. Stephen Abbot (1804-1871) was a partner in the Abbot Downing Company, which revolutionized 19th-century transportation with the Concord Coach. After the original partnership dissolved in 1847, Abbot went into business with his son(s), operating under the name J.S. and E.A. Abbot and Company. This company continued to build Concord coaches and other carriages.
The company manufactured various types of carriages and wagons, including the renowned Concord Stagecoach. The company's legacy is primarily associated with the Concord Coach, a robust and comfortable stagecoach known for its unique suspension system using "thorough braces" instead of springs. It became widely used in the American West by Wells, Fargo & Co. for its durability and adaptability to rough terrain.
