Hunting Fugitive Slaves in Illinois, 1839 two-page folded letter to St. Louis with red "Juliet, Ill., Dec 12" cds (original name of Joliet) and manuscript "18¾" rating, letter regarding men who have come from St. Louis to enforce a claim for "a Negro Slave" and allegedly to return him to his owner in St. Louis, writes about "abbolisionists" having the men tried unsuccessfully for kidnapping, but nonetheless asserts that…the gentlemen who have taken the Negro are Kidnapers and never will take him to St. Louis but will take him to some other point and sell him and put the money in their own pocketts; some separation along folds, otherwise Very Fine.Estimate $300 - 400.

Denver mentioning the Kansas and Nebraska problems; also two collateral letters: one ALS from Reverdy Johnson (U.S. Atty. Shipping a Negro Women and Three Children, folded letter datelined "Demopolis Ala 31st Dec 1849" sent to Buchanan Carroll & Co in New Orleans, La., with blue "Moble, Ala., Jan 3" cds and matching "5" rate handstamp, with content in whole…I have just been advised by a friend in Texas that he would ship me a negro women and three children between the 1st and 15th of Jany. They will be on the Galveston Steamer and he was instructed to consign them to yr. care in Orleans and advise me beforehand. I did not intend to trouble you with such a commission but my situation is such that I cannot leave here before Friday and should those negroes reach Orleans before I do, please have them forwarded to Rogers & Pope of Mobile by the first steamer. Their passage will probably have to be paid across the gulf; if so, please pay it and either send the bill with the negroes, making the boat pay it, or I will pay it on my arrival which will be by the 10th of Jany. Slave and Free State Letter, cover to Oroville, Cal. franked with 1857, 10¢ green, type II (32) manuscript canceled with "Paid" handstamp below, matching "Brownsville, Vt., Apr 17" cds, with lengthy 3-page enclosure datelined "West Windsor, Vt., April 16th, 1858" with interesting content of the feeling in the North when slavery was the issue and the Admission of New States to the Union…The bill for the admission of Kansas under the "Lecompton Constitution" passed the Senate and was sent to the House for their concurrence, but the House refused to concur by a vote of 120 to 112; so the President stands rebuked by his own party. It may be difficult to predict correctly what parties may be in the field two years hence. The party lines between the Slave States and Free States seem now pretty clearly marked out and defined. The question heretofore has been as to the right of holding the Negro in Slavery but during the last session of Congress, the right of the white man to self government has been seriously disputed; and the President, in his Kansas Message, affirms that Slavery exist in Kansas as much as in South Carolina or Georgia; and a Slavery Constitution is recommended for Kansas without their consent. If these measures can be carried through and Kansas made a Slave States by the Military Power of the U.S. the Slave power will have accomplished its object and shown that property in Slaves is in no respect different from that of any other kind of property and that they have the right to emigrate and carry their Slaves into any State or Territory, and there hold them as slaves, and be protected in the quiet enjoyment of their slave property by the strong arm of the Government. But the Free State have heard the clanking of this chain before the last link was forged and welded, and they will arise in their mighty power and grind to to powder and cast it in the water and make the slave power drink the water. In 1860, there will be a leader around whom the Republican Party will Rally and support, who will be triumphantly elected President of these United States. There will also be another leader of the Slave Power who will combine the support of the Slave States, and who will be doomed to defeat. These will constitute the two great parties, and in my humble opinion, the only two. But be that as it may and enlightened people will not long sustain a political party, who to effect a wicked and corrupt object, abandon every principle of reason and justice, and act at defiance the inalienable right of man.; some cover edge wear, F.-V.F., a fascinating letter which virtually predicts the outcome of the coming Civil War.Estimate $200 - 300.
