Isabel, Feb. 1. 1847, two-line postmark and matching "10" rating on folded letter endorsed "Monterey jan. 18th" to Cincinnati O., interesting long letter reading in part "…We are expecting an order to join Gen. Scott at Tampico every day as he has said he wished our regiment to be in the fight. He intends to attack Vera Cruz with a force not less than 20,000 and the troops are all to concentrate at Tampico, previous embarking for that point. It will be a little more of a fight than we had here on the 21st of Sept…"; some edge wear, F.-V.F.

(Naval) U.S. Navy - African Squadron, group of six comprising two 1860-61 covers from USS Sumter off the Coast of Africa on anti-slavery patrol, 1860-61 cover from New Sharon Me. to USS Mohican, African Squadron, 1845-51 c. from USS Marion that was on the West Coast of Africa or the Mediterranean; 1850 letter from USS John Adams off the coast of Africa near St. Paul de Loando to Boston Mass. via Salem, and 1848 letter from USS Brig Perry off the coast of Natal, Brazil which was on anti-slavery patrol between Africa and Brazil, F.-V.F., interesting group.

(Naval) U.S. Naval Lyceum, illustrated full rigged ship in oval handstamp on cover addressed "Care of Commander A.L. Case, U.S. Steamer Caledonia, Paraguay Expedition", cover forwarded to Newburgh, N.Y. with straight line "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "8" rate applied upon entry into the mails, "Recd July 27th, 1859" docketing on reverse; edge opening tear at top and rounded corner at bottom left, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The U.S.S. "Caledonia" was chartered by the Navy in September of 1858 and entered service soon after sailing for South America to take part in the 18 ship Paraguay Expedition, attempting to gain apology for the 1855 firing upon the survey steamer "Water Witch". In January 1859, the Caledonia took up position above Rosario in Rio de la Plata. Paraguay agreed to apologize for incident and pay indemnity.

(Naval) Pole Station, Antarctica, U.S.N., Jan 20, 1958 - U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze, duplex postmark tying Airmail 6¢ Wright Bros. issue on cover to New Jersey, with "Flown: McMurdo Sound-South Pole., First Landing Deepfreeze 111." unsigned endorsement, reverse signed by legendary explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South Pole as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, for which he led the New Zealand section, on 4 January 1958. His party was the first to reach the Pole overland since Amundsen in 1911 and Scott in 1912, and the first ever to do so using motor vehicles.
