Lot 753    

(England to Wilmington, N.C., 1827), folded cover from Wooler, England to Wilmington, N.C., manuscript "2/5" rate for packet fee from Wooler, carried by British Falmouth Packet Redpole to Bermuda and onward to Annapolis by Cunard Sailing Packet Susan, postmarked red "Annapolis Mar 19" cds with matching straight line "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "27" rate (2¢ ship + 25¢ inland postage), Very Fine, ex-R. Winter.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Since the British Falmouth packet service to New York was suspended in late 1826, letters for America in 1827 were put off at Bermuda, where Cunard sailing packet was contracted to carry them to Annapolis, Maryland, where they entered the US mail system. This letter was carried on the first of only nine monthly voyages to Annapolis before the British government ended the service. Four letters are recorded from this voyage, of the 10 recorded from all voyages. A very rare British packet service cover.

Ouest, Dec 16" transit and receiving cds's, Very Fine.

Manila, Philippines to New Haven, Ct., cover forwarded from Northampton, Mass. to Isaac E. Clark with "via Southampton" routing endorsement at top, reverse with "Hong Kong, Se 5, 1853" and red London transit date stamps, front with manuscript "1/8" and "40" ratings, entered the U.S. mails with "New York, Br. Pkt., Nov 17" cds and matching "45" due handstamp, forwarded with Northampton cds and manuscript "Forwarded 5/50" rating, with original length 4 page enclosure datelined "Manila, July 22nd, 1853" with some interesting content; cover missing backflap and small opening tear at top, F.-V.F., ex-White.

C., J" (10.25) transit cds; second bearing 1¢ blue, type Va (24) horizontal pair, pos. 49-59L5, creased from file fold, tied by "New Orleans La., Nov 3" cds, carried by Inman Line contract Vigo from New York Nov. 6th to Liverpool arriving Nov. 21st, red Calais "Et-Unis Serv. Am. A. C., J" (11.23) transit cds, Thiengen (11.25) arrival backstamp, F.-V.F. pair of 1¢ plate V circulars.

These two covers from the same correspondence lack addresses because they were sent in bulk in wrappers.
