Mariposa" design depicting sailing ship and route map cover, in combination with 1894, 1¢ yellow + 2¢ brown, two singles (74, 75), all tied by "Honolulu, H.I., Jun 6, 1895" duplex postmarks, addressed to New York City then forwarded to New Jersey, with circular New York "Forwarded" handstamp also tying 2¢ dull violet stamp, reverse with partial San Francisco transit postmark dated June 23, New York postmark dated June 29, and Long Branch, New Jersey receiver with same date, Very Fine, the 7¢ franking overpaid the 5¢ single-weight rate to New York, ex-Dr. Nettles. John D. Spreckels was owner of the Oceanic Steamship Company (OSSC) and son of Claus Spreckels. J.D. Spreckels and Bros. Co. acted as general agents for Pacific visitors with "Splendid American Steamers" of the Oceanic Steamship Company that left San Francisco every four weeks bound for the "Milky Way of the Ocean" that included Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti and Rarotonga.

The Catholic mission at Kohala, on the Big Island, was established in 1841 by Father Arsenius Walsh. Father Damien would serve as the pastor there from 1865 until 1873 when he volunteered to attend to those with leprosy (Hansen's disease) who had been exiled to Kalaupapa on the island of Moloka'i.

The addressee, Ernest Franz Gambs, was a popular stamp dealer, who also dealt in rare coins. He published the California Philatelist magazine from 1882-1900.---At the time of this cover, Charles Scharf had just sold his interest in the stationers business to his partner Henry Johnson, allowing him to keep the company name, and corner card, intact.
