Lesueur) in Jefferson City, Missouri, with 2-line corner card "On Hawaiian Government Service., Department of Foreign Affairs.", stamp cancelled with partial Honolulu barred-oval duplex dated Jul. 20, 1899; reverse with San Francisco machine cancel (Mahoney 720) dated Jul. 28, 1899 and Jefferson City receiver circular postmark dated Aug. 1., Very Fine, a rare consular mail usage after the annexation of Hawaii and shortly before becoming a U.S. territory.Scott No. O2 Estimate $750 - 1,000.
A similar cover from the Fitzpatrick collection (Rumsey sale 22, lot 2137) posted on the same date, sent to the Secretary of state of New Hampshire, realized $850. Most covers with the 5¢ official stamp are Soldier Mail sent by troops passing through Hawaii during the Spanish-American war. Official consular (Foreign Department) mail usages are far scarcer.
