This design was created in New England by an unknown publisher. Known examples were used from early to the middle 1850's. The Maine Law prohibited the manufacture and sale of liquor within the state was passed in 1851.

(Propaganda) God Hath Made of One Blood All Nations of Men, British allover J. Valentine propaganda design on cover to Brimfield, Ill., blue bold "Gustavus, O., Jul 10" cds with matching "Paid" handstamp, Very Fine, a scarce British propaganda cover used in the U.S.

The addressing on this cover appears to may have been in the hand of reform activist Elihu Burritt likely sent during his lecturing tours.

A REMARKABLE LATE USE OF THE OCEAN PENNY POSTAGE PROPAGANDA ENVELOPE IN THE UNITED STATES.

This is one of three examples of this design State used in the United States. The other two examples are in the Royal Philatelic Collection.

(Propaganda) We Ask of Congress Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage, elaborately illustrated "Barnabas Bates" propaganda cover depicting Steamer, Train & Eagle with Shield in black, on cover with ornate imprint of "D. Felt & Hosford, Stationers" on reverse, to A. Jones in Washington, Ga. franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) tied by light Augusta, Ga. cds, Very Fine and choice, one of four recorded examples from this correspondence; with 1988 P.F. certificate.

A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF THE BARNABAS BATES ILLUSTRATED "CHEAP INLAND AND OCEAN POSTAGE" PROPAGANDA COVER.

Barnabas Bates, who served as New York's assistant postmaster between 1833-36, later began working for the New York Democratic Party and the Equal Rights Party. He served as an advocate for reduced postal rates, which made public communication possible for a greater number of people. In the 1850's, Bates adopted the Elihu Blurritt practice of using illustrated envelopes to further his reform proposals for America.

Felt & Hosford, Stationers" on reverse; some light soiling, otherwise Very Fine, scarce example of this spectacular Barnabas Bates "Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage" propaganda design.

In the 1850s, Bates adopted the Elihu Blurritt practice of using illustrated envelopes to further his reform proposals for America. Ironically, this cover was sent to a member of House of Representatives under the Congressman's franking privilege to receive his mail free of postage.
