Charleston, S.C., Honour's City Express, 1851-58, 2¢ black on bluish, left margin vertical strip of three, positions 5/7/9 with wide sheet margin, slightly in at right, light crease in margin, manuscript cancel in pencil, used on large embossed Valentine cover to Miss L. A. Mills on Line Street, with beautiful decorative Valentine enclosure which appears to have originated with the cover; minor edge tears, Very Fine, ex-Kuphal; with 1976 P.F. certificate.

Paid (Utica, N.Y.), red three line handstamp on locally addressed gold floral bordered Valentine Cover, with embossed Valentine enclosure with colored floral and poem embellishments; cover with some light edge toning, Extremely Fine, Beesley's Express used another larger type handstamp of which only a couple are known, illustrated in the American Stampless Cover Catalog (volume II, page 71), ex-Kuphal.

Brooklyn City Post, sharp bold oval handstamp with matching "Paid" below on locally addressed folded Valentine lettersheet, inside with beautiful multicolored lithographed Gentleman at Writing Desk view and 8-line poem below, with first two line reading…"Within this heart dear Valentine, Resides a lady fair" which matches with a heart shape flap on gentleman's chest which opens to show the "fair lady" beneath, valentine with imprint, "Pub^d by B.F. Butler, 146 Walnut St., N.Y.", Extremely Fine and choice.

AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS BROOKLYN CITY POST MARKING - WITH ONLY THREE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED.

This small local post is believed to have been in operation for the Valentine season only for a year or two and have no relation to the other major Brooklyn local posts of the period. The other two known examples are also Valentine usages.
