California Penny Post Co., 1855-59, 7¢ vermilion. On 1853 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, "Penny Post, Sacramento" circular handstamp alongside, printed listed of California Cities which the Penny Post Co. serviced, Very Fine and choice, a wonderful & rare cover.

Lot 96    

Chase's Express, Deadwood and Indian Creek, Paid. Colorless embossed scroll frank on 1853 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, entered the mails with "Sacramento City, Cal., Mar 12" circular date stamp, docketed "Mr (18)56" on reverse, Very Fine, two known example of the express are known, ex Barkhausen; with 1976 P.F. certificate.

G. W. Chase started his express in 1856, running from Deadwood & Indian Creek to Yreka where he connected with Wells, Fargo to Sacramento.

Everts & Co.'s Express, Feather River. Blue straight line handstamp on cover to Sacramento City, manuscript "S.B. 1.00" express rate in pencil, entered the mails with "Georgetown, Cal., Aug 17" circular postmark and matching "Paid 6" straight line handstamp at right, rate crossed out and re-rated "3", cover with edge wear, otherwise Very Fine.

Fast Freight & Express Co., S.F., May 10, 1865. Double circle date stamp with second strike on backflap, on 1864 3¢ entire to Oroville, blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Sac. Messenger, May 10" oval date stamp and black company frank at top, cover reduced at right into indicia, F.-V.F.

Ford & Co.'s Express. green circle and star handstamp on reverse of 1851 folded letter to New Albany, Indiana, enclosure datelined "California Middle Fork of the American river, April the 10th, 1851", entered the mails with red circular "Sacramento City, Cal., Apr 21" postmark with matching large "40" rate handstamp, slight cover soiling and edge wear, F.-V.F., the only recorded Ford & Co's Express usage to the mails.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Ford & Co.'s Express operated in 1851 and 1852 between Sacramento and Greenwood in El Dorado County.

Ford & Co.'s Express. green circle and star handstamp on 1851 incoming cover to Sacramento City, "Belleville, Illinois" origin cds with manuscript date and "40" rate at upper right, magenta manuscript "1.65" notation for $1.25 express fee plus the 40¢ collect, cover with edge faults, F.-V.F., one of two recorded examples of the Ford's & Co. circle & star handstamp used from the mails.
