Strawberry Valley, Cal., Yuba Co., June 16, 1881 (Yuba). Clear town postmark (Williams YUB-1480) on 1¢ postal card to Boston, Mass., matching cork cancel alongside, Very Fine, a highly unusual and extremely late usage of this town postmark, Williams reported usage from 1865 to 1868.

Tennant, Cal. (Santa Clara). Violet double circle postmark (Williams SCL-3990) on cover to New York franked with 3¢ Bank Note cancelled by matching grid, cover with original enclosure datelined "Pine Ridge", slightly reduced at left & small edge tear, F.-V.F., the earliest recorded example of this marking.

Lot 219    

Todd's Valley, Cal. correspondence, 1858-60 (Placer). Six 10¢ Nesbitt entires addressed to Nashua, N.H. and postmark at Todd's Valley, each with original enclosure from brother to sister regarding life in the gold country, some interesting content regarding an 1860 fire in town, snowstorm, stealing from sluiceboxes, etc., also includes first letter written in 1855 from Sacramento City after the trip out to California; few of the entires with edge wear and small tears, F.-V.F.

Manuscript postmark (Unlisted in Williams) on cover to San Juan franked with manuscript cancelled 3¢ Bank Note, cover with original enclosure datelined "Mines", regarding silver mining, slightly reduced & small tear at left, Very Fine, one of two known examples of this postmark.

Via Nicaragua, Ahead of the Mails. Red boxed handstamp with additional manuscript notation at top of cover to Boston, Mass., franked with 1851, 3¢ dull red, horizontal pair and canceled by "Steam Ship" two-line handstamp; right stamp with sealed diagonal tear at lower right, F.-V.F.

Lot 222    

Via Nicaragua, In Advance of the Mails. Oval handstamp applied in San Francisco, on cover to "Hon. J.W. Denver, Ho. of Rep's, Washington City, D.C., N. Y", entered the mails with "N. York, Steamship" circular handstamp and matching straight line "Free" handstamp, docketed "Wm. M. Gwin" (Senator of California), Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

J.W. Denver, Wm. M. Gwin and Cornelius Vanderbilt were friends, instrumental in getting Sacramento as the permanent state capitol of California in March of 1854. It is a fair assumption that Gwin could have been in Sacramento for the opening of the new session of the state legislature. Vanderbilt was an owner of the transit company across Nicaragua. The cover could have gone privately to San Francisco and also on the Nicaragua route.
