Front with bottom flap (others professionally restored) addressed to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, canceled by red Maltese Cross, straight line "Ballyshannon" origin postmark at left and light "Halifax, Nova Scotia, Nov 20, 1840" arrival transit cds, various manuscript rate markings, Very Fine, a rare & early transatlantic usage from Ireland.Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.
An interesting note is written in pencil on the reverse and states, "Explanation: the person who received this as the envelope of his letter was the son of the person who wrote it, and it was given to me by the person who recd it, about, I think, AD 42 or 43 or at all events at the time the Mulready envelopes first came out. The writer of the letter was then Postmaster at Ballyshannon. Co Donegal Ireland. The pen mark '11' was additional to the 1d envelope to bring up the postage to 1/- Eng this is changed into NS curr'y to 1.3 + 1d local = 1/4 postage. P. Offices in. N.S. at that, hence, not use machine stamps".
