Pao Tzu Ku, China, May 24, 1923" and the complete letter as follows: Friend "Free":-, I hope you will pardon me for not writing you sooner than I have, but between working during the day, and stepping out at night, I have found little time to carry on any correspondence. But now the story is entirely different, and I have all the time in the world for writing. I happened to be fortunate enough to be on "The Peking Express" which was held up by a gang of Bandits near Lincheng on May 6th about 2:30 A.M. They pulled us out of bed and looted our compartments. After shooting one or two that showed fight, they carried myself and sixteen others off to their stronghold in the mountains, and at the present writing are still holding us as hostage. Out of the seventeen people who where carried from the train, only two were partly clothed. The rest of the party including myself where only in our pajamas, and some of us in our bare feet. They marched us all that morning until about noon, when we reached their first stronghold. And we had no more than dropped to the ground for a rest when we where greeted with a shower of bullets. The government soldiers were right on their trail. The Bandits were about 1200 strong and the soldiers about 2000 strong. Between the two they made things very lively that day. The Battle scene from "The Four Horsemen" had nothing on our little party. As nighttime came on, the firing ceased, and under the cover of darkness the bandits sneaked us down the opposite side of the mountain, and once again we started on the march. And for the next three days our lives were one mountain after the other. Marching and climbing by night, and little sleep and an occasional shower of bullets by day. But now matters are somewhat better for us. The Peking Government is negotiating for our release, and there is a strong possibility that we will be set free within the next three or four weeks. In the meantime the bandits have allowed us to communicate with the outside world, and have permitted supplies and reading matter to come in. At present we are quartered at the Bandits Headquarters, a place called Pao Tzu Ku, 50 Li (about seventeen miles) from the Railroad Town of Lincheng, Shantang Province. And from the present outlook I guess we will remain here until we are either shot or released. We are all trying to make the best of things up here. And we manage to lead quiet lives. Outside of being poked in the ribs with guns every once and a while and being told by our hosts that we will all be shot if their demands are not granted within twenty fours hours, our lives are uneventful. I guess that is all I have to say just now. Will write you again soon. Give my regards to Charley Upton and the rest of the boys. Henley. P.S. In event that Charley wishes to use this letter as copy, he has my permission to do so. Let me hear from you soon. J.A.H., some cover edge wear, Very Fine, a truly phenomenal and unique letter and cover bearing both of the exceedingly rare Pao Tzu Ku Bandit Post local stamps.
Estimate    $7,500 - 10,000.

On May 6th, 1923, under the leadership of Kuo Tsai-Chi, bandits derailed the Tientsin-Pukow Express Train and took passengers as prisoners. The captives where then forced to march for ten days into the Pao Tzu Ku mountain where they where held for ransom. Carl Crow, an American Red Cross representative, organized a messenger service for the hostages between Pao Tzu Ku and Tsaochwang. A small supply of postage stamps where printed from wood dies cut at Licheng in 5 cents and 10 cents denominations. The 5 cents stamps were valued "50" in error. These stamps where used on letters to and from hostages until there eventual release on June 13th, 1923.The hostages included citizens of China, United States, Great Britain and various European nations.
