D. W. Harrier's Express. Printed frank (Haller FH3, Ty. 1 with different border) on 3¢ Pink entire (U58) to San Francisco, conjunctive use with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Nevada Sep. 20" oval datestamp, repaired along right edge where opened into embossed stamp, otherwise Fine, a very rare frank, ex-Dale-Lichtenstein.

Lot 268    

Dietz & Nelson's B.C. & V. Express. Blue double-circle handstamp ties British Columbia & Vancouver Is. 1860 2 ½p Dull Rose (2) pair and single on United States 3¢ Pink entire (U59) to Williams Creek, Cariboo, British Columbia, conjunctive usage originating in San Francisco with "Wells, Fargo & Co. San Francisco Jul. 5" oval datestamp and their printed frank, blue "Collect" in oval handstamp and manuscript "1.00" express fee, manuscript "1865 A.D." notation, pair has slight crease, entire has trivial opening nick at right, otherwise Very Fine, an extraordinary and very rare mixed franking, at this time the 2 ½p stamps were used provisionally as 3p stamps, the internal rate to Williams Creek was 9p and the express fee collected by Dietz & Nelson was $1.00 (the Wells Fargo entire paid their fee and U.S. internal postage), ex-Dale-Lichtenstein, with 2004 P.F. certificate.

Lot 269    

Downieville & Howland Flat Express. Printed frank (Haller FD6, Ty. 1) on 1864-65 3¢ pink entire (U58) to Morristown, uncancelled, roughly opened at right just affecting indicia (crudely repaired), Fine, few known examples of this rare frank, a short-lived express which ran between Downieville and Howland Flats (as the express name states), probably in operation for less than a year in 1865.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Lot 270    

Estill & Co. Express. Manuscript marking at center bottom of buff cover to Oskaloosa, Iowa, dropped in Weston, Mo. post office with there red cds of Aug 16, 1850 with matching "10" rate marking, few very minor faults and a little dirty, but Very Fine for a journey in a saddle bag, this is the legendary express man who went out on the Oregon Trail and took letters both ways, pictured in Winter's "Nebraska Territory Postal History" on page 48, 6 covers all from the one trip are known, two of which are reported to be in the Wells Fargo History Rooms.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

Eureka Express Co. Printed frank (Haller FE5, Ty. 1) on legal-size 6¢ red entire (U86) to San Francisco, usual conjunctive usage with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Nevada, Cal. Feb 16" oval datestamp, small opening tear at top right, Very Fine and attractive, this frank is extremely rare on the 6¢ entire, especially in used condition.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Eureka Express Co. Printed frank (Haller FE5, Ty. 2) on 3¢ green entire (U83) to San Francisco, usual conjunctive usage with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Nevada, Cal." oval datestamp, flap missing & small mended tear at top affecting frank, part of address re-inked, Fine and scarce.

Eureka Express Co. Two postal entires each with company frank in black, 1st is 3¢ entire with blue Wells, Fargo & Co. oval handstamp of Nevada, Cal. used as unaddressed paste-up, 2nd is 2¢ brown entire with Moore's Flat postmark, F.-V.F.

Perfect strike of blue double oval with matching and "From Adams" in large blue block letters on first page of Jan 17, 1854 San Francisco Herald newspaper, fascinating contents regarding Steamers, Expresses, Shipping, Real Estate, etc., Extremely Fine and choice.

Everts, Davis & Co. Daily Express. Printed frank on 1853-55 3¢ red Nesbitt entire (U10) to Quincy/American Valley with manuscript date cancelling indicia, included is a contemporary newspaper ad of Everts, Davis & Co. Express listing offices & indicating weekly dispatches to "American Vally", lightened cover stains, F.-V.F.; with 2003 P.S.E. certificate.
