Clear strike of special duplex postmark (Towle SP-3) tying 1873, 3¢ green on legal size cover to San Francisco, Cal., additional endorsement "With Jarrett & Palmer Lighting Train" at top; cover file fold and small sealed tear at top left, still Very Fine, an extremely rare railroad postmark used only for this special transcontinental trip, less than 4 examples of this postmark are known; with 1997 P.F. certificate. This special theatrical train, which left New York on June 1, 1876 at 12:40 a.m., set the original transcontinental speed record of 84 hours for the 3313 mile trip of San Francisco.
