Great Britain, 1849 Liverpool, England to New Orleans, La. Folded letter with manuscript "pr America" routing upper left corner, Octagonal "Paid At Liverpool Fe 23 1849" lower right quadrant, handstamp "24" (restatement of rate) just above, red "1/" handstamp and red manuscript "5" cents credit to the U.S. (U.S. inland), per the Cunard Line steamer America, departing Liverpool 24-Feb, arriving Boston 8-Mar. this was the first west bound sailing under the U.S. - G.B. Postal Convention of 1848, Very Fine.

Lot 262    

Great Britain, 1849 Liverpool, England to Philadelphia. Outer lettersheet of circular franked with 1841 1d red (slightly cut in) tied by barred numeral "466" cancel, and whose one pence franking was intended to pay the printed matter rate, however, this was rated at the letter rate with handstamped "19 Cents" debit applied in the U.S. with a black "24" cents due hand-stamp superimposed, endorsed "pr Europa" routing upper left, red handstamped Liverpool Newspaper revenue handstamp on reverse, Very Fine.

Great Britain, 1850 Liverpool, England to Beverly, Mass. Blue folded cover franked with 1841 1d red + 2d blue + 1847 1sh green tied by barred numeral "466" cancels with "Liverpool" backstamp postmark, additionally tied by red handstamped numeral "24" with matching red "Paid Ship" alongside, red "21 Cents" credit handstamp to the U.S. (5¢ inland + 16¢ sea) at left, backstamped red "New - York Ship" receiving cds, 1sh large margins, Very Fine.
Scott No. 3+4+5    Estimate $150 - 200.

This franking of 1 shilling and 3 pence, paid the one shilling per half ounce treaty rate to the U.S. plus 3d late fee. The late fee for Liverpool was on an experimental basis and charged 1d for 15 minutes after the time of clearing the letter box and 3d after 15 minutes up to 10 minutes prior to the time of dispatch from sometime in 1847 to 1 March 1849 when this rate was put into effect in several towns. Carried per the Collins Line steamer "Atlantic", departing Liverpool 10-Jul, arriving NY 21.Ju1.

Franked with 1841 2d blue, strip of 3 (cut in & center stamp creased) tied by blue numeral "186" grid & "Irvine" (Scotland) postmark with second strike alongside, addressed to New York with magenta "1/" rate, New York "Paid" & "21 Cents" credit handstamp, Fine, a rare early registered transatlantic.

Lot 266    

Great Britain, 1851 London, England to London, England with forwarding to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Folded letter with printed script "On Her Majesty's Service" with "New-York Feb 7 5Cts." exchange cds & Liverpool exchange transit, evidently this went free of transoceanic packet postage as there is no debit for that portion of the treaty rate, with 5c collected from the addressee in Philadelphia; small sealed tear on the top, Very Fine, a scarce free franked transoceanic usage.
