Great Britain, 1853 London, England to New York, N.Y. Folded cover franked with 1841 2d blue + 1848 10d Embossed (cut to shape) tied lightly struck barred numeral cancels for a total franking of 1sh, which paid the correct half ounce letter rate, markings include red "5 Cents" credit to the U.S. (U.S. inland) at right & red "Paid" arc handstamp, Very Fine, Carried per the Cunard Line steamer Asia, dep Liverpool 8-Oct, arriving NY 19-Oct.

Lot 272    

Great Britain, 1853-55 Great Britain to the U.S. with "PAID SHIP" markings. 3 covers; (1) Liverpool to Boston 1853, partial red "May 19 48" receiving cds (48 cents rate paid), with a red "10" rocking horse cents credit to the U.S. (5 cents inland X 2) and manuscript "Europa" routing, "Liverpool F.R.H. My 6 1853" (year should be 1854 - Floating Receiving House) receiving cds on reverse (2) G.B. to Lowell, Ma., 1854, partial red Feb 9 receiving cds, red "42 Cents" rocking horse credit to the U.S. (5 cents inland + 16 cents sea) in between, and red manuscript "2/" rate, blue "Cleckheaton" and two Liverpool 25-Jan transits on the reverse. (3) Ennis, G.B. to Lowville, N.Y. 1855, green "Ennis Oc25 1855" cds & partial "New York Nov 15" (48 cents rate paid) cds, red manuscript "2/", Fine.

Lot 273    

Great Britain, 1854 Liverpool, England to Eureka, Illinois. Blue folded cover franked with 1841 3d red strip of 3 + 1847 1sh green tied by numeral "466" barred oval & red New York/24 transit marking, backstamped with green "Liverpool" postmark, scissor cut affecting 1sh & vertical file fold affecting center 1d, F.-V.F., This franking paid the 3p late fee, plus 1sh per half ounce letter rate. Carried per the Collins Line steamer Baltic, departing Liverpool 23-Feb, arriving NY 6-Mar.

Lot 274    

Great Britain, 1855-57 Liverpool, England to the U.S. 3 covers; all three with "Posted Since 8:30 Last-Night Liverpool" auxiliary handstamps and all three collect in the U.S., one single and two double rate covers, Very Fine.

Great Britain, 1856 Liverpool, England to New York, N.Y. Blue folded cover franked with 1854 6d red violet pair (cut to shape) + 1855 1d red tied by numeral "466" barred oval with Liverpool postmark alongside, 6d Pair also tied by red Paid in arc, handstamped red "21 Cents" credit to the U.S. (16c sea and 5c U.S. inland) (no photo).
Scott No. 7+16    Estimate $300 - 400.

Carried per Collins Line steamer "Baltic", departing Liverpool 25 June, arriving New York 6 July. A scarce usage of the 6d used to pay the one shilling rate to the U.S., and when combined with the 1p late fee this truly is a rare item and significant postal history piece in immaculate condition.

Lot 276    

Great Britain, 1856 London to New York. Folded cover franked with 1847 1sh (four singles cut ot shape) + perforated 1d red tied by numeral "17" grid cancels with orange London Maltese Cross postmark on reverse, markings include ed "20 Cents" credit to the U.S. (4 x 5¢ per half ounce U.S. inland), red curved "Paid" and circular "X" hand-stamped, Very Fine.
Scott No. 5+16    Estimate $200 - 300.

This franking paid the correct rate of one pence late fee, plus 1 shilling per half ounce for up to an ounce, and an additional 2 shillings for between one and two ounces, as G.B. had no triple rate.

Great Britain, 1856 London, England to New York, N.Y. Blue folded cover franked with two nice 1854 6d red violet tied by barred numeral cancels of London with red "Paid" in arc on left stamp (Lombard Street) Maltese cross hand-stamped on the reverse, Very Fine and attractive.

Lot 278    

Great Britain, 1856 Plymouth, England to an unrecognizable town in New York. Folded letter sheet with "Plymouth Ja31 1856 B" cds with a "19 Cents" rocking horse debit handstamp, red handstamp "Sent Back To England Without a Reason For Non Delivery.", blue manuscript "Try Scriba, N.Y." to the right of the original address, which is erroneous, "Boston 24 Br. Pkt. Feb 20" exchange cds in the lower left corner, and red manuscript "Returned from New York" across the top, Liverpool transit cds on the reverse; small cover tear at top, Very Fine.

Lot 280    

Great Britain, 1857 Chester, Great Britain to New York, N.Y. Cover franked with 1847 1sh green (cut to shape) + 1856-58 1d tied by numeral "180" barred oval duplex cancel of Chester with brown manuscript underlined "above 1/2 oz" & handstamped "48" cents due marking, backstamped "Liverpool De 7, '57" cds, Very Fine.
Scott No. 5+20    Estimate $100 - 150.

As this wasn't sufficiently prepaid, it was treated as totally unpaid at the rate of 24 cents per half ounce. The only sailing that fits the Liverpool markings is that of the Collins Line steamer "Adriatic", departing on her final voyage for this line from Liverpool on 9-Dec-1857, arriving New York 21-Dec-1857.
