Great Britain, 1857-1858 Three Covers to the United States. All franked with 1856 1sh, includes 1857 cover to Boston franked with two singles (one defective) paying the correct 1sh per half ounce letter rate, plus 1sh Floating Receiving House Fee, 1858 cover franked with single to Albany, N.Y. & forwarded & last is 1858 folded cover to Andover, Mass. franked with defective single showing scarce type "Boston Paid Br. Pkt. 11 Apr" exchange cds in red, Very Fine.

Lot 282    

Great Britain, 1859 Chatham, England to Belleville, New Jersey. Neat registered cover franked with 1856 6d + 1sh tied by Chatham numeral "173" duplex cancel with red London Registered oval, red Crown over arced Registered handstamp & red Boston Exchange marking, adhesives additionally cancel by bold red numeral "24" handstamp, Very Fine and attractive.
Scott No. 27+28    Estimate $150 - 200.

Franking pays 1sh treaty rate to the U.S. plus 6d registration fee. Registration of mail between the U.S. and G.B. Treaty between U.S. - G.B. amended to include registered mail 1/5/1856. Carried per Cunard Line steamer "Canada", departing Liverpool 2 Jul, arriving Boston 13 Jul. Attractive early example of registered mail between G.B. and the U.S.

Lot 283    

Great Britain, 1859 London, England to New York, N.Y. Folded cover franked with 1856 6d + 1sh neatly tied by Liverpool numeral "166" duplex cancel with manuscript "City of Manchester from Liverpool" routing in upper left corner, and red handstamped "21 Cents" credit to the U.S., letter datelined "London Feb. 1, 1859", Extremely Fine.
Scott No. 27+28    Estimate $150 - 200.

Franking paid the correct 1 shilling per half ounce letter rate, with an additional six pence unexplained. There was a six pence railway fee for letters posted in Euston station for the TPO to Liverpool. According to Moubray (Jane & Michael - British Letter Mail to Overseas Destinations 1840-1875) these were backstamped "Euston Square station". Sometime in 1859, the fee for mail received at the Floating Receiving House was reduced to six pence (Tabeart - Robertson Revisited). Without either the railway or FRH markings it can't be ascertained exactly which service was used. Carried per the Inman Line steamer City of Manchester, departing Liverpool 2-Feb, arriving NY 24 Feb.

Great Britain, 1860 London, England to Philadelphia, Pa. Folded letter with manuscript "pr Arabia Str.", red manuscript "Registered" with a red "Lombard Street A 5 Mr 16 60 Paid" cds, partial red "Phila. Br. Pkt. Mar 30 Paid" cds, red oval "Registered 16 Mr 60 London" handstamp & "4/6" rate (4 shillings quadruple rate + 6 pence registration fee), "96" cents restated in violet manuscript and manuscript "20/6" which probably represents the credit to the U.S., Very Fine.

Great Britain, 1864-1865 Great Britain to United States. Lot of three covers to United States franked with various surface printed issues, including 1864 cover to Illinois franked with 3d pair + 6d sent from Falmouth with red "Chicago Am Pkt" exchange marking & unusual red "21 Cents" handstamp in circle, 2nd cover is 1864 from St. Austell to New Jersey franked with 1sh with unusual red "21 Cents" handstamp in circle, last is 1865 folded cover to New York franked with rare 1sh block of 4 from Liverpool (cover a bit soiled), F.-V.F., an interesting group.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Great Britain, 1865 Glasgow, Scotland to Newark, New Jersey. Cover franked with 1865 1sh tied by black "Glascow" barred numeral duplex cancel & partial red "N. York Br Pkt Paid" cds, light pencil notation "moved away" with boxed "Adv'd" handstamp & straight line "Due 2" handstamp for the advertising fee, backstamped with "Newark Oct 7 1865" double circle postmark & red boxed "Unclaimed" handstamp, original enclosure from son to father regarding death of mother/wife, Very Fine, an unusual Dead Letter item.

Great Britain, 1865 Manchester, England to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Folded cover franked with 1865 1sh green (defective) by "Manchester 498" duplex cancel paying the 1sh per half ounce letter rate, manuscript notation at left "over 1/2 oz." & handstamped two line "Insufficiently Pre-Paid" in bottom right with black "Philadelphia Br. Pkt. Nov 15" exchange cds alongside, black manuscript "38" cents debit to the U.S. (double the 3¢ British inland, and 16¢ sea postage) & hand-stamped "48" cents due the addressee adjacent, F.-V.F.
Scott No. 48    Estimate $150 - 200.

Weighs between ½ and 1 ounce, and contains an affidavit from the U.S. Vice Consul at Bradford, bearing a 5¢ Certificate Revenue Stamp. Mail collected in the Liverpool, London, and Southampton exchanges addressed to Philadelphia were made up in separate bags from 1.Jan-1854.

Great Britain, 1865-66 London, England to New York, N.Y. Two folded cover each franked with with single 6d & tied by London numeral "46" barred oval with two line "Insufficiently Prepaid" (one in red & one in black) and both with depreciated currency cds (one U.S. 34 Notes & one U.S. 36 Notes), one with crease through stamp, Very Fine, Partial prepayment ignored, and the 24 cents (or U.S. notes equivalent) per half ounce letter rate was accessed the addressee.

Great Britain, 1866 London, England to New York, N.Y. Folded cover franked with 1864 1d red tied by barred numeral "11" cancel of London & oval "New York Post Office Advertised Jul 14" handstamp paying the 1 pence late fee for posting at Chief District Offices and Lombard Street between 6:00 PM and 6:45PM, postmarked red "Lombard Street F.O. Ju 22 66 Paid" cds & curved "Paid" handstamp, endorsed manuscript "pr Steamer Cuba via Liverpool" routing instructions at bottom left, markings include pencil "8" rate & straight line "Cannot Be Found" handstamp with "New York Aug 16" cds on reverse, Very Fine.
Scott No. 33    Estimate $150 - 200.

The only explanation for the pencil "8" is that this was returned by private ship to G.B. where the private ship rate was 8d. Carried on departure per Cunard Line steamer "Cuba", departing Liverpool 23 June, arriving Boston 4 July.

Lot 290    

Great Britain, 1867 London to New York, N.Y. Two covers both paying triple rate with different. frankings, 1st is cover with three pairs of 6d tied by barred numeral 49, 2nd is cover with three 1sh singles tied by London duplex cancel, both with red crayon "15" credit to the U.S. (5¢ U.S. inland x 3), Very Fine.
Scott No. 45, 54    Estimate $200 - 300.

The inception of a triple rate in the G.B. rate structure was 2-Apr-1866, and the one shilling per half ounce rate changed to 6 pence on 1-Jan-1868, or for a little over 18 months. These covers are far from common.
