Registered Postal entire 2d Postage 1d Registration additionally franked with ½d + 4d + 6d tied by oval Gracechurch registry handstamps, with violet boxed "Late Fee 4d Paid" handstamp at bottom, entire with couple sealed tears, Very Fine.Scott No. 127+133+135 Estimate $100 - 150.
This franking paid the 4 pence late fee (Scott #133) and 2½ pence per half ounce for up to 1½ ounces. The 1904 Postal guide for Great Britain (page 594) lists a schedule for registered letters - Provincial and London District Mails with the following rates for Grecechurch Street: Night Mails - 6:00 PM to 6:29 PM - 2 pence, 6:30 PM to 6:54 - 4 pence, and from 6:55 to probably 6:59 - 6 pence. There was no mention of late fees for foreign mails, however is is assumed the same table applied.

The cancel is that of Hosking type 3 (Roger - The Transatlantic Post Office), with the "4" corresponding to the White Star Liner "Oceanic", which is pictured on the reverse. In addition to the "Oceanic", the following numbers are listed in Hosking: 5 - "Olympic", 7 - "Majestic" (up to 1911) and "Titanic" (1912), 8 - "Adriatic". This cancel was used from 1908 to the end of the service in 1914.

This franking pays the correct 2½ pence first ounce letter rate + the 2shilling six pence late fee for expediting censor mail ahead of other censored mail. A very scarce usage! .
