Great Britain, 1876 London to Caracas, Venezuela. Folded cover franked with 1873-80 1sh (perfin "S.S. & Co") tied by London duplex cancel with green oval "Forwarded By Schuster, Son & Co./Sep. 30, 1876/London/Postage Prepaid" handstamp at bottom left, this is the handstamp of the writer, & matches the perfin stamp, Very Fine.

Lot 329    

Great Britain, 1877 Manchester, England to Caracas, Venezuela. Folded cover franked with 1867-80 2sh blue + 1873-80 1sh green tied by "Manchester 1 Sp 77" barred numeral "498" duplex cancels and paying the correct 1sh per half ounce for up to 1½ ounces, manuscript endorsement "per Str. "Nile" at upper left, Very Fine and choice, a scarce destination & cover bearing the 2sh value.

Great Britain, 1878 London, England (New Cross, SE) to Riga, Russia (Latvia). Folded cover franked with 1d red + 2½d claret (both with perf initials) tied by six sided "London 4 MR 78" duplex cancel paying the 1 pence late fee for posting at London Branch Offices between 6.00-7.00 P.M., and 2½ pence per half ounce letter rate, "Rigi" arrival backstamp, Very Fine.

Great Britain, 1884 Liverpool to Caracas, Venezuela. Folded cover franked with 1883-84 4d green (horiz. pair, single off cover cats. £175) tied by "Liverpool" squared circle postmarks with manuscript endorsement "per Haytian", Very Fine.
Scott No. 103    Estimate $100 - 150.

This franking of 8 pence paid the correct 4 pence per half ounce letter rate for up to an ounce by Br. Packet via Southampton, a UPU rate.

Lot 332    

Great Britain, 1885 London, England to Athens, Greece. Folded cover franked with 1883-84 6d tied by London "Lombard St. L 1" (late fee) duplex with "Athens" backstamp arrival, pays the 2½ pence per half ounce letter rate for between half and one ounce plus one pence late fee, Very Fine, Scarce single franking use of a stamp paying an uncommon rate.

Lot 333    

Great Britain, 1904 London, England (Grecechurch Street) to Berlin, Germany. Registered Postal entire 2d Postage 1d Registration additionally franked with ½d + 4d + 6d tied by oval Gracechurch registry handstamps, with violet boxed "Late Fee 4d Paid" handstamp at bottom, entire with couple sealed tears, Very Fine.
Scott No. 127+133+135    Estimate $100 - 150.

This franking paid the 4 pence late fee (Scott #133) and 2½ pence per half ounce for up to 1½ ounces. The 1904 Postal guide for Great Britain (page 594) lists a schedule for registered letters - Provincial and London District Mails with the following rates for Grecechurch Street: Night Mails - 6:00 PM to 6:29 PM - 2 pence, 6:30 PM to 6:54 - 4 pence, and from 6:55 to probably 6:59 - 6 pence. There was no mention of late fees for foreign mails, however is is assumed the same table applied.

Lot 334    

Great Britain, 1910 On board ship to St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. Picture post card franked with 1d tied by "Transatlantic Post Office/15 Ju 10/4" cds.
Scott No. 128    Estimate $75 - 100.

The cancel is that of Hosking type 3 (Roger - The Transatlantic Post Office), with the "4" corresponding to the White Star Liner "Oceanic", which is pictured on the reverse. In addition to the "Oceanic", the following numbers are listed in Hosking: 5 - "Olympic", 7 - "Majestic" (up to 1911) and "Titanic" (1912), 8 - "Adriatic". This cancel was used from 1908 to the end of the service in 1914.

Lot 335    

Great Britain, 1916 London, England to St. Croix, Switzerland. Censored cover franked with 2½d + 6d + pair of 1sh (all with perfins) tied by "London F.S. 17" postmarks with censor's tape at top & type written "Posted with Special Fee", irregularly opened at top, Very Fine.
Scott No. 163+167+172    Estimate $150 - 200.

This franking pays the correct 2½ pence first ounce letter rate + the 2shilling six pence late fee for expediting censor mail ahead of other censored mail. A very scarce usage!
