(Restored Rates) London, England to Boston, Mass. 1849. Red Maltese Cross "Pais LS 12 JA 12 1849" handstamp on cover with manuscript "1"(sh) rate & bright red New York "7" due handstamp (2¢ ship fee + 5¢ per half ounce under 300 miles U.S. domestic zone rate), Very Fine, Carried on the Cunard Steamship Canada, which departed Liverpool on January 13 arriving New York on January 29.

Lot 39    

(Restored Rates) London, England to Middleton, Connecticut 1848. Orange red "Ship - Letter London No 25 1848" cds on small cover with matching Maltese cross "Paid 25 No 25" in the middle, markings include magenta manuscript "8" pence private ship fee & endorsed "by Private Ship" on top, bright red "New-York Ship Jan 28 7cts" cds applied in transit (2¢ ship fee + 5¢ per half ounce under 300 miles U.S. domestic zone rate), backstamped rimless "Ship Letter - Liverpool - No 26 1848" cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The intent of the private ship routing was probably to circumvent the retaliatory rate, saving the writer 4 pence (8 cents U.S) and the recipient 29 cents, which arrived during the restored period.

(Restored Rates) Shiffnal (Shropshire), England to Colchester, Connecticut 1848-1849. Postmarked with black rim less "Shiffnal De. 28, 1848" cds on 1848 cover with a black manuscript "Paid" at upper right, red "1/" in the middle, markings include red "Boston Ms, Ship, Jan 12" receiving cds & matching "7" cents due hand-stamped (2 cents ship fee + 5 cents per half ounce under 300 miles U.S. domestic zone rate), backstamped greenish blue rim less "Liverpool De 29, 1848 A" cds with a partial black oval Liverpool transit hand-stamp on the reverse, small nick upper right comer, Very Fine, First west bound restored rate, Per the Cunard Line steamer America, departing Liverpool 30-Dec, arriving Boston 12-Jan.
