Lot 594    

Hong Kong, 1880 Shanghai to Chefoo, China. Cover franked with 1880, 5¢ on 18¢ lilac cancelled "S1", with "Shanghae Jy 12 80" (Proud type D7), provisional was necessitated by the rate change on 18 Feb 80 to 5¢ per half ounce for letters between Hong Kong and Treaty Ports, stamp was issued 1 Mar. so this is quite an early use, Gurevitch recorded only five other 5¢ on 18¢ covers up to the time of this one, inter-port covers are far less common than mail to and from overseas destinations and only one earlier cover to Chefoo has been seen; cover with left corner torn, F.-V.F. SG No. 24.

Lot 595    

Hong Kong, 1880 Shanghai to London, England. Cover franked with 1880, 10¢ on 12¢ pale blue cancelled "S1" (Proud type K6: value 1,000 points), with "Shanghae Mr 12 80" (Proud type D7), provisional necessitated by third UPU rate of 10¢ per half ounce to all foreign member countries, rate changed to 10¢ on 18 Feb 80 and provisional stamp issued 1 Mar. so this is a very early use, usage predates earliest use of 10¢ on 12¢ stamp from Shanghai recorded by Proud (21.9.80) and Gurevitch (1 Apr 80), Gurevitch records only one overall earlier use of this stamp: on 1 Mar 80 (first day cover) from Hong Kong, backstamps "Hong Kong Mr 15 80" & "London W. AP 21 80"; slight cover wrinkling, Very Fine, carried by French line Ava from Shanghai 12 Mar, Hong Kong 15-17 Mar and Naples ca. 20 Apr 80. SG No. 25.

Hong Kong, 1884-91 Hong Kong printed matter to Nagasaki and New York. 2 items; 1) 3-page printed prices current in French from A. R. Marty, 9 Dec 84, with QV 2¢ carmine cancelled "B62", with "Nagasaki 16 Dec 84" receiving cds struck across the flap (Bishop type I-8 recorded less than two months: 13 Dec 84 - 15 Feb 85), per Bishop, large circle type cds were used with or as an obliterator so use as an arrival mark was apparently unknown, all the more unusual since it was applied on printed matter, although "Par P&O Steamer Rosetta" is printed on the interior, that vessel transported the next mail from Hong Kong to Colombo whereas this cover was carried by P&O Teheran from Hong Kong 11 Dec to Nagasaki 16 Dec 84, pre-1900 inward mail to Nagasaki from Hong Kong is very seldom seen and this is the earliest known printed matter with this origination - destination, 2) wrapper bearing QV 2¢ carmine cancelled "B62", with "E. C. Ray Share, Ship and General Broker, Hong Kong 20. Oct.91" handstamp across back flap, carried by Gaelic from Hong Kong 21 Oct to San Francisco 11 Nov 91, Very Fine.

Lot 597    

Hong Kong, 1885 Shanghai to Naples, French Packet. Cover franked with 10¢ QV stamp cancelled "S1" (worn), with adjacent "Shanghai, A, My 8 85" departure cds, quite a late use of S1 killer (Proud LRD: 14 Aug 85), this 21mm "Shanghai, A" cds was not recorded used on cover with S1 by Webb or Schoenfeld (type Ei), reverse with "Hong Kong My 12 85" transit and "Napoli 16 6 -85" receipt cds's; cover fold across bottom and small flap tear, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Apparently carried by private steamer from Shanghai to Hong Kong, since French Line terminus did not revert from Hong Kong to Shanghai until three voyages later. Then by Messageries Maritimes Yangtse from Hong Kong, 14 May, to Naples where it was off-loaded two days before her 18 June Marseille arrival.

Hong Kong, 1891-1904 Queen Victoria. An interesting lot of 28 covers & 7 post cards all with various frankings of the Queen Victoria issues, most of the covers with 10c rates (singles of combination frankings), cards with 4c frankings or combination there of, $1 single or 50c pair, some interesting postmarks, mixed condition, worth careful inspection.

Hong Kong, 1892-1909 Hong Kong Transit Usages. 5 items; G.B. to Hong Kong (2 covers, one with unrecorded Hong Kong direction mark) and 3 Macau cards via Hong Kong to Europe; 1) G.B. 2½d postal stationery envelope to Shanghai cancelled hooded circle "E. Low Hill Liverpool 4 Au 92", not previously seen on mail to China, with "Hong Kong Sp 6 92" (Webb type D) arrival cds, 3 cards from Macau cancelled on departure and with various types of Hong Kong transit cds, 2) 30r postal card to France with "Hong Kong, Fe 22 93" (Webb Type D), also bearing octagonal "Ligne N Paq. Fr. No 7." 3) Post card to London with "Victoria Hong Kong 30 De 04" (Webb type I), and 4) Post card to Germany with "Victoria Hong Kong 4 Ja 09" (Webb type J), and "Shanghai B.P.O. Ja 8 09" (since directed via Siberia). 5) opened out cover, tatty due to much forwarding, from GB to passenger on board "S.S. Szyrian c/o P&O S. N Co." Transit markings: "Shanghai B.P.O. Au 7 09", "Kobe 14.8.09" on outer of four Japanese tissue paper forwarding sheets (glued to cover), along with straight-line "Hongkong" direction marking, not previously recorded, in same shade as Kobe cds, partial "Victoria Hong Kong 21 Au 09" cds, and various other transit and postage due markings; F.-V.F. overall.

Hong Kong, 1893 Gibraltar to Royal Navy Ship in China. Cover addressed to surgeon on H.M.S. Peacock bearing Gibraltar 25c QV stamp cancelled "A26" killer, adjacent "Gibraltar, De 14 93" cds, also "T" and blue manuscript "6" and "15" postage due markings, reverse with three Hong Kong datestamps of Jan 25 & 26 with indexes "B", "C" and "D" representing the receipt mark, the search for the location of the ship and the outward dating when letter was forwarded to Singapore, Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1896-1900 Hong Kong to United States and Philippines. 2 covers; 1896 Hong Kong Hotel corner card cover to Santa Barbara, Cal. franked with 20¢ double-weight postage made up of ten single 2c QV stamps cancelled with "Hong Kong No 11 96" cds's, backstamped "San Francisco, No 10, 1896" ("No" in error for "De") and "Santa Barbara De 11" cds's, and 1900 cover to Manila franked with 10¢ lilac on red QV stamp cancelled "Hong Kong, My 21 00" cds over large oval "Forwarded By, F. Blackhead & Co., Hong Kong" handstamp (recorded 1897-1902 by Rowe), addressed to "Dr. Perry, Marine Hospital Services, Manila P.I.", reverse with U.S. Military Station receipt cds of May 26 (cover fold across bottom), F.-V.F.

Hong Kong, 1897-1913 Hong Kong Postal Cards. 6 cards; 1) QV 4¢ grey cancelled "Hong Kong De 9 97" to New Britain, the earliest seen to this very scarce destination, with"Singapore De 16 97" transit cds; filing punch holes, 2) QV 4¢ grey cancelled "Hong Kong Ap 12 98" to Germany, with Colombo, Suez, and Alexandrie transit datestamps, and "17 May Gerd" arrival cds, 3) QV 4¢ on 3c brown cancelled "Hong Kong Mr 21 01" cds with "Reply" crossed out, a scarce inter-port use: "Amoy Mr 25 01" struck on arrival, 4) QV 4¢ carmine cancelled "Victoria, Hong Kong, 10 Mr 04", adjacent "Hong Kong K.B 10 Mr 04" (Kowloon Branch, Proud type D2) origin cds, and "Lubeck 9 4 04" arrival cds, 5) KEVII 4¢ carmine, with earlier than recorded Webb type K cancel: "Hong Kong VI 15 Apl 11" (Proud D105: 24 Apr 11 - 20 Jan 20), 6) KGV 4¢ carmine reply card (intact) to G.B., earlier than recorded use of this card (Webb: 26 Nov 14), cancelled "Hong Kong K.B 28 My 13" (Proud type D2), Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1902 Tangier to Yokohama, Japan. Postal card with "Tangier 27 Ja 02" cds & "A26" barred numeral duplex canceling Gibraltar 10c indicia overprinted "Morocco Agencies" (H&G R8), English/Arabic "Port-Said 5 II 02" transit cds, oval "Continental Hotel Tangier, Morocco" handstamp corner cachet, with "Singapore. To. Hong Kong, C, Fe 24 02" marine sorter cds (Proud D16, distinguished by low index C, value: 5,000 points, although recorded by Proud as D13), applied on board the P&O Oriental II, "Yokohama, 6 Mar 02, Japan" foreign mail and native Japanese receiving cds's, partial "Gibraltar, Ja 27 02" transit cds on reverse, Very Fine, a very unusual origin-destination and marine sorter combination cover.
