(Incoming Mail to San Francisco) 1862, Valparaiso, Chile folded letter. To San Francisco, California, postmarked with red two line "Paid To Panama" applied by the British P.O. in Valparaiso, and red colored pencil "1/"rate which paid the half ounce letter rate to Panama, black "Panama Mr 13 1862 B" British P.O. in Panama transit cds in the middle, partial black double line "San Francisco Cal Ap 6 1863" receiving cds and hand-stamped "20" cents due (steamship rate for over 2500 miles), black manuscript "Via Panama" routing instructions in the upper left corner, faint black "Valparaiso 18 Fe 1862" British P.O. cds on the reverse, Very Fine, ex Jessup, Pearce.

(Incoming Mail to San Francisco) 1862, Glasgow, Scotland folded letter. To San Francisco, California, franked with Great Britain 1d red + 4d orange + two 1sh (Scott 20, 28 (2), 34) tied by black "Glasgow Aug 5" duplex cancels paying twice the 29c per half ounce treaty rate from Scotland to California, red "San Francisco Paid" receiving cds in lower left corner, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Per NGL steamer "Hansa" departing Southampton 6 Aug, arriving New York 18 Aug or Inman Line steamer "Glasgow" departing Liverpool 6 Aug, arriving N.Y. 20 Aug. Very attractive three color franking and scarce prepaid double rate transcontinental usage.

To San Francisco, California, to San Francisco, California, franked with Great Britain 1d red + 4d orange + pair 1sh (Scott 20, 34, 42) tied by black "Paisley Aug 21" duplex cancels paying twice the 29c per half ounce treaty rate from Scotland to California, red "San Francisco Paid" receiving cds, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Carried per Cunard Line steamer "America" departing Liverpool 22 Aug arriving Boston 3 Sep. Very attractive three color franking and prepaid double rate transcontinental usage at the old 1/ 2 ½ pence per half ounce. The California (west coast) rate became the same as the rest of the U.S. on 1-Jul-1863, which evidently wasn't reflected in Great Britain.

To San Francisco, California, franked with New South Wales 6d (vertical crease on left margin) tied by a black "Sydney NSW 63 JU30 B" hand-stamp with a black double line "San Francisco Nov 6 1863" cds & "Ship 4" handstamps alongside, F.-V.F., The ship rate is representative of the 2 cents drop rate doubled, from 1-Jul-1863.

To San Francisco, California, franked with Great Britain 6d (Scott 60) tied by a black "London Au 13 73" duplex cancel paying the correct 3 pence per half ounce letter rate for up to an ounce from 1-Jan-1870 through 30-June-1875 with a red "San Francisco Paid All Sep 1" receiving cds in the lower left corner, Very Fine.
