Treaty Ports, 1898 Manila to California. Envelope (stains on back), bearing red QV 10c cancelled at "Hong Kong Jy 13" (98), manuscript annotation vertically at left: "U.S.S. Manila, Manila, P.I.", carried by US Navy cutter to Hong Kong, purple oval "U.S. Consulate Hong Kong", on back: "Suisun City, Cal. Rec'd Au 14 1898", Very Fine, around a dozen such usages seen.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This use of Hong Kong stamps by Spanish-American War military personnel in Manila occurred only during two - three month period from Battle of Manila Bay until establishment of US military PO at Manila.

Lot 756    

Treaty Ports, 1899 Ningpo, China Incoming Cover from Trout Creek, N.Y. Envelope with 5c dark blue Grant (Scott 291) cancelled "Trout Creek N.Y. Jul 3 1899" bulls eye duplex, with back-stamps: "Sidney Center Ny Rec'd Jul 3", "U.S. Postal Agency Shanghai Rec'd", and Chinese Post Office bilingual cds of "Shanghai 3 AuG" and "Ningpo 4 Au 99", Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Trout Creek PO established in 1847, but 2000 census recorded only 1,100 residents in Tompkins township, of which Trout Creek is a part. Although Ningpo P.O. was established in 1844, five years later there were only 19 foreign residents. Letter sent on City of Rio de Janeiro, which departed San Francisco on 6 July to Yokohama, then by Japanese mail steamer to Shanghai. The first example seen of this combination of origination and destination, each of which is quite scarce by itself.

Treaty Ports, 1899 Shanghai I.P.O. Card to Germany. Shanghai Local Post card (hand painted portrait of Chinese Court on back), with 4c Chinese adhesive over local post card stamp, cancelled bilingual "Shanghai 30 Oct 99", bearing Hong Kong QV 2c pair, cancelled light "Shanghai Oc 30 99" (BPO), and with Shanghai I.P.O. tie-print, only recorded Apr - Nov 99. Stamps also cancelled "Hong Kong No 3 99", and with "Hannover 3.12.99" arrival cds, two punch-holes at left, Very Fine.

Treaty Ports, 1900-08 Foochow to U.S. 2 items; 1) QV 4c gray postal card, with missionary's preprinted message, cancelled "Foochowfoo Fe 26 00" to Baltimore, Md. "Hong Kong Mr 2 00", with "San Francisco Cal Paid All" transit cds, and "Baltimore Md Ap 6 1900" arrival cds. 2) to Boston with pair of KE 5c green and orange stamps cancelled "Foochow Oc 13 06", Proud type D7: 1905-8, "Victoria Hong Kong 17 0c 06" transit cds on back, Very Fine.

Lot 759    

Treaty Ports, 1901 Shanghai combination card to Canada. Imperial Chinese Post 1c card, with Chinese 1c and 2c adhesives, cancelled bilingual "Wenchow 9 Sep 01", nine years earlier than recorded by Chang (#82: 15 Mar 1910; possibly a typographical error for 1901?) in combination with Hong Kong QV 2c pair, cancelled "Shanghai Sp 13 99" (BPO, Proud type D16: 1900-1904). Bilingual "Shanghai __ Sep 01", partially covered by one of Hong Kong stamps, demonstrating that, at least in this case, foreign postage was applied at Shanghai Chinese PO, very scarce. at originating Chinese PO, as latter was generally believed to be the case during preceding IPO tie-print era. "Kobe Japan 17 Sep 01", and "Toronto Oc 11 01" transit cds, forwarded to New Brunswick, with on back: "Woodstock N.B. Oc 16 O1" arrival cds, Very Fine.

Treaty Ports, 1901 Shanghai Combination Card to Germany. Postcard bearing Chinese ½ c pair and 1c (3, one mostly covered by Hong Kong stamp), cancelled oval bilingual "Peking Feb 6 1901" (Chang type 28 X) in combination with Hong Kong QV 2c pair, cancelled "Shanghai Fe 25 01" (BPO), long delay likely due to exigencies of Boxer Rebellion, bilingual "Shanghai 22 Feb 01" on back, and "Mannheim 30.3.01" arrival cds on front, Very Fine.

Lot 761    

Treaty Ports, 1903 Ningpo, China to Darmstadt, Germany. Part of red newspaper wrapper (wrinkled) with 4c KE imprinted stamp cancelled "Ningpo De 22 03", directed via Siberia, and with Chinese PO bilingual "Shanghai 23 Dec" transit cds. Sent via Siberia during initial six month use of trans-Siberian railroad, which ended due to Russo-Japanese war, Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

First example seen of any mail (let alone a newspaper wrapper) sent from Ningpo by this short duration routing (for reference: only about a dozen examples of this routing known from Hong Kong).

Treaty Ports, 1904-10 Treaty Port Cards. 3 items; 1) postcard Tientsin to Paris, colored photo of Viceroy arriving at Chinese Hotel, bearing KE 2c green (Scott 88) tied by "Tientsin Dec 19 10" Br P.O. (Webb type B) cds, correct post card rate was 4c, if there was a message, as on this, but this apparently slipped by at 2c printed matter rate, as no stamp is missing. 2) Post card Liu Kung Tau to London, real photo of Emperor St., Peking, bearing pair of KE 2c green cancelled "Liu Kung Tau Jy 6 06" (Webb type B) cds, with "Shanghai B.P.O. Jy 9 06" transit cds. 3) red "Chinese Imperial Post" postal card Canton to Germany, 1c stamp bearing native cancel, foreign stamp to pay UPU postage missing, Chinese bilingual "Canton 30 Dec 04", and French PO double-circle "Canton 31 Dec 04" transit cds, with "Gnadenfrie 2.2.05" arrival cancel, F.-V.F.

Treaty Ports, 1905 Canton Postcard Correspondenece. 3 cards; USA and Hong Kong (2) picture postcards, all to Dr. Shelby, Canton, with less common index "A" Canton cds used primarily on inward mail. 1) "New York Aug 31 1905" "P" duplex killer on 2c carmine, with "Victoria Hong Kong 9 Oc 05" transit, and red-brown "Canton A Oc 10 5" arrival cds. Deep red to rusty brown Canton arrival date-stamps are recorded as having been applied on board river steamers to Canton; Proud D7: only 21 Aug 05 - 20 Apr 06; index "A" not recorded in red by Schoenfeld; Webb Value Guide indicates 25-50 on cover, but this seems high, as examples are very seldom seen. 2) and 3) Matched pair of cards with Hong Kong KE 2c green cancelled "Victoria Hong Kong, 10 Ap" and 7 JY 05, with black "Canton A" arrival cds of, respectively, AP 11 and JY 8 5, F.-V.F.

Treaty Ports, 1905-08 Canton Incoming Mail. 3 items; U.S. (2) and New Guinea to Canton, all with less common Canton index A cds used primarily on inward mail. 1) Pacific Mail SS Co. colored postcard with message written 1 Aug. onboard, with overlapping "San Francisco Cal 3 Aug" and "Seattle, Wash 5 Aug 1905" machine cancels on US 2c carmine stamp, "Victoria Hong Kong 4 Sp" transit, and small "Canton A Sp 5 05" arrival cds (Webb type Div recorded only 24 May 5 - 24 Sep 6 with single digit year). 2) "Cheriton Va Mar 2 1908" with killer canceling 10c brown US stamp, originally to Hong Kong, then readdressed "c/o American Consul Canton China. On back: San Francisco and Victoria Hong Kong transit cds, and large CANTON A AP 8 08 arrival cds (Webb type Ei). 3) Real photo post card (badly damaged) of Papuan natives, bearing 1d black and carmine British New Guinea stamp overprinted "Papua". (Scott 11) canceled lightly, with adjacent "Samarang Papua 2_ Mar 08" cds. "Victoria Hong Kong 1 My 08" transit, and "Canton A My 2" arrival cds (Webb type Ei). A long trip from a very scarce origination to China, Fine.
