New South Wales, 1854-55, 1sh pale red brown. Ample to mostly large margins, tied by barred "1" oval handstamp on 1854 cover to St. Ines Hunts, England, "pr Australian Stm" endorsement at bottom left, prepaid to England at 11d ship rate (non-contract voyage) but charge 4d upon arrival, reverse with "Sydney, N.S.W., Fe*, 1854" rimless date stamp and green May 27 receiver, Very Fine and choice, an unusual rating.

Clear to large margins, small tear at left, tied by barred oval handstamp on 1855 cover to St. Ives Hunts, England, "pr Kent" endorsement and manuscript "6" credit for double private ship rate, reverse with "Sydney, N.S.W., Sp 1, 1855" rimless cds and green receiving cds's, F.-V.F.

Lot 991    

Tasmania, 1856-57, 2d dull emerald green + 4d deep blue. Tied by barred "68" oval handstamps on 1857 cover to London, England, per "Emu via Suez & Southn" routing endorsement, red "Hobart-town, Sp 9, 1857" general post office cds and stamps additionally tied by red "London, De 7, 57" cds; 2d without watermark, which is rare on cover, has been lifted for identification and hinged back in place, F.-V.F., sent on the E&ARM Emeu which was beached in the Red Sea and the mail transferred. Scott No. 8+9a.

Victoria, Adams & Co. Express, Melbourne N.S.W. Clear red chamfered boxed handstamp on 1854 cover front to Adelaide, South Australia, franked with 1854, 1sh blue tied by "1/V" barred oval handstamp, matching "Melbourne, Victoria Se 6, 1854" oval origin date stamp and endorsed "By Adams Co's Express" at top, receiving cds; front with slight soiling and edge repairs, Fine, still a Great Express Rarity of this Adams & Co. Melbourne express marking, this being one of two recorded strikes known.
SG No. 25    Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

This device with "N.S.W." state was probably produced in San Francisco where they did not realize that the state of Victoria had been created in 1851.

Victoria, 1850, 3d bright blue. Position 20, in combination with 1851, 2d gray lilac on 1851 cover to Bathgate, Scotland, tied by Glenelg "33" butterfly cancels, manuscript 8 rate and reverse with "The Glenelg, Port Paid, Au 13" oval date stamp, Melbourne transit and red entry and "Jan 8, 1852" receiving cds's; 2d short at top and bottom and cover wear, Fine, still a very rare 3d first printing issue on cover. Scott No. 3b+5.

Victoria, 1854, 3d indigo. 4-margin single tied by barred oval handstamps in combination with 1856, 1d yellow green, paying the 4d inland rate on 1856 mourning cover to Ballarat, reverse with "Melbourne, Victoria Dc 22" origin oval date stamp, mourning envelope manufactured by Sands & Kenny papermakers for various New Zealand and Australian stamps; minor cover soiling, F.-V.F. Scott No. 4+29.

Victoria, 1854-58, 6d dull orange. In combination with 1857, 2d lilac on cover to New York City, all tied by barred "1" cancels, endorsed "per European" via London but underpaid for that route and sent by private ship eastbound with "San Francisco, Cal., 12, Sep 5, 1857" integral rate cds (10¢ transcontinental rate plus 2¢ ship fee), Melbourne origin date stamp on reverse, with original enclosure; cover with horizontal crease at top affecting stamps, F.-V.F., ex Kramer.

Victoria, 1858, 6d bright blue. Uncanceled on 1860 mourning cover endorsed "By Melbourne" from Deniliquin via Momam to London, England from the famous Lewes correspondence, in combination with New South Wales 1854, 6d gray tied by indistinct barred numeral handstamp, red "London, De 19, 60" entry cds, partial Deniliquin cds and reverse with Momam and Melbourne transits, Very Fine, a rare mixed franking, covers from the Riverina via Melbourne needed stamps from both colonies with the Victoria stamp left uncanceled as is often the case; signed P. Holcombe.
