1854 Washington, D.C. to Havre, France. "Washington, D.C. Jul 9" cds on small legal size cover which has been trimmed on both sides, red "PAID" and circular "20 cut to shape" handstamp, red "New York Br Pkt Jul 12" transit cds and Calais transit cds, manuscript "6 5d" French due marking in the middle, red British transit & Havre receiving cds's on the reverse; small cover repair at lower right, F.-V.F., a scarce handstamped "20cts" rate marking on a very unusual rate cover.

Lot 122    

1857 Charleston, S.C. to Paris. Cover franked with 1851 3¢ dull red pair (slightly cut in & left stamp defective) tied by "Charleston, S.C." cds with a red "New - York Br. Pkt Mar 4" exchange cds & boxed "GB 1F 60c" accountancy mark.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The franking paid the correct 5¢ per half ounce British Open Mail letter rate, which paid only the U.S. inland, with the remainder collected in France. This was sent during the three month interval between the implementation of the Anglo-French convention of 1 Jan 1857, and the U.S. - French Postal Convention, which was effective 1 April 1857.

Lot 123    

1857 New Orleans, Louisiana to Paris, France. Folded cover franked with 1851 10¢ type III (cut in) tied by New Orleans cds paying the correct 5¢ per half ounce by British Open Mail letter rate for up to an ounce, which paid only the U.S. inland, with the remainder collected in France, postmarked red "New-York Br. Pkt Mar 18" transit & framed "GB 1F60c" accountancy marking with French "16" decimes due marking.
Scott No. 15    Estimate $300 - 400.

This was sent during the three month interval between the implementation of the Anglo-French convention of 1 Jan 1857, and the U.S. - French Postal Convention, which was effective 1 April 1857. During this period if by British packet where both sea and British transit were due, the French Office paid the British Office 1 franc 20 centimes per 30 grams and 40 centimes centimes respectively, as indicated by the framed 1F60c hand-stamp in this instance, or if by American packet where the sea postage was prepaid, only 40 centimes was paid, which was indicated by an oval GB 40c hand-stamp. According to Hargest (George E. - History of Letter Post Communication.) "Covers showing British packet service during these three months are scarce." Per Cunard Line steamer Persia, departing New York 18-Mar-1857, arriving Liverpool 28-Mar-1857.

1857 Three Month Period Letters To France. 3 stampless folded letters (Jan-Mar-1857 Anglo-French agreement). Boston (25-Mar), Havana (16-Mar - New York Forwarder), and New York (10-Feb). All with pencil "5" cents paid indicated, framed "GB 1F 60c" accountancy and either 8 or 16 decimes due handstamps, Very Fine.

1864 New York, N.Y. to Canton de Creon, France. Cover franked with 1861-66 5¢ + 10¢ tied by grid cancel with red "New York Am Pkt Paid" cds below, markings include straight line "Too Late" with boxed "G.B. 1F60c" accountancy mark & manuscript "1½d" rate, 5¢ with small tear & 10¢ s.e. at right, F.-V.F., Accompanied by detail explanation of usage.

Lot of two stampless covers, both sent unpaid under provisions of the US-British Convention of Dec-1869, effective Jan. 1, 1870, which allowed for 4¢ per ½oz. open mail rate to France via England, 1st Cover with Boston cds & blue crayon "4" cents, "GB/2F" accountancy marking, French entry cds & handstamped "8" decimes due with "Short Paid" handstamp, 2nd Cover with Boston cds & blue crayon "2/8" (double rate - 8 cents) per half ounce, "GB/2F" accountancy handstamp and handstamped "16" decimes due, French entry cds & "Short Paid" handstamp, F.-V.F.
