1831 Gambier, O. Dec. 6 to Great Britain. Straight line postmark on 1831 folded letter to to Trowbridge, England, matching "Paid" handstamp & manuscript "25" rate representing the over 400 miles postal zone to New York for a single sheet of paper, faint "Liverpool Ship Letter" on the reverse; some corner wear at top, F.-V.F., a rare usage of a straight line postmark on a transatlantic cover.

Lot 142    

1847 New York, N.Y. to Liverpool, England. Red "Paid" handstamp on folded letter with a light pencil "48" cents rate, endorsed "pr Washington Steamer", manuscript "2/" due & green "Liverpool Oct, 10 1847" receiving cds on the reverse, this was paid at the rate of 24c per half ounce for up to an ounce (48c), with prepayment required, under the auspices of the Bremen Postal Arrangement of 1847, Very Fine, examples of mail to Bremen from the first five voyages are scarce.

1849 New York, N.Y. to London, England. Folded letter sheet with manuscript "pr America" routing, red curved "Paid" handstamp, pencil "72"and manuscript "4/" due markings, receiving cds on the reverse, this was in the middle of the restored rate period but the payment of "72" cents (3 x 24 cents) in New York, and collection of 4 shillings (G.B weight progression went from a double to quadruple) in G.B. was at the previous retaliatory rates; file folds, F.-V.F.

Lot 144    

1851-52 Philadelphia, Pa. to Liverpool, England. With forwarding to Florence, Italy, cover with red octagonal "Phila 24c Paid" handstamp, red "Liverpool, Jan 14 1852 Paid" cds, blue "Philadelphia Dec 29 Pa." cds & red "19" credit to G.B. (3c inland postage and 16c sea for British packet) just beneath, Liverpool receiving postmark in the bottom left corner, paid the 24¢ per half ounce U.S. - G.B. treaty rate but on forwarding to Italy was discovered to weigh between ¼-½oz which subjected it to two rates under the French quarter ounce standard, Very Fine.

1855 New York, N.Y. to Arundel, England. Cover with forwarding to London, lightly struck "N.York Am. Pkt. 21 Aug" cds, with a 21 cents debit to G.B. for (5 cents U.S. inland postage, and 16 cents sea postage), handstamp "1/" due marking crossed through and "1/1" substituted, red framed "Postage Not Paid To London" handstamp and blue "Arundel Dp 4 1855 A" receiving cds, blue printed shield on the back flap - "Commissioners of Emigration of New York", forwarded with "America Liverpool Sp 2 55C" receiving cds, this was assessed 1/ or 24 cents per half ounce U.S. - G.B. treaty rate, plus 1d for forwarding, Very Fine.

1857 Walnut Hills, Ohio to Mount Charles, Ireland. With forwarding to Goslar, Hanover, blue "Walnut Hills O. Oct 1" cds & matching handstamp "Paid", with a manuscript "24" & red "19" cents credit to G.B. handstamp, "America Dublin Paid Oc19 1857" date stamp, rimless "Mount Charles Donegal" receiving cds, two Donegal, Dublin & red London transit date stamps, Aachen and blue "Goslar 26/10" receiving cds on the reverse; cover tear and wear with partial backflap, F.-V.F. appearance.

Pkt., 21, Aug 21"exchange cds and manuscript "1/" due mark with Liverpool receiving cds below; tiny cover tear at top, Very Fine.

1866 New York, N.Y. to London, England. Folded letter addressed to "The Secretary, In The Military Dept., India House" with manuscript "On Her Majesty's Service" across the top, postmarked "N York. Br. Pkt Sep 11 10" (10 cents) debit cds and red "Official - Paid KA Sp 23 66 London" cds, letter headed "Military Department, India Office 10th April 1866" with handstamp double line oval "Military Department Received India Office Sep 24 1866" inside, note "Return this 5 months hence" indicating this was a follow up reply, routed via British Packet with whatever fees due paid by the government of England; small tears at top, otherwise Very Fine, scarce.

Cover franked with 1863, 24¢ gray tied by cork cancel with matching "Ellenville, N.Y." cds alongside, postmarked "New York Am Pkt, Jul 20, 42" debit cds and additional red "New York Am Pkt Paid 3" cds applied in error with grid cancel obliterating, "Short Paid" handstamp and manuscript "2/" due, transit and receiving backstamps, F.-V.F.
