La Costilla Col. June 17/66, manuscript postmark on neat cover to Taos, New Mexico franked with manuscript cancelled 1861 3¢ rose, trivial reduction at right & small repair cover repairs, Very Fine and rare, This town straddles the Colorado-New Mexico border, and in 1872 the office was officially transferred to New Mexico. Only two covers are known from the Colorado Territory period.

Lot 140    

LaPorte C.T. Novr 15th 1862, manuscript postmark on 3¢ Postal entire to Minnesota, minor bit of wear & soiling, flap torn, F.-V.F. and rare, Opened in 1862, this office was closed in 1864 when severe floods nearly wiped out the town of LaPorte. It reopened in 1866, after the town had been rebuilt.

Larkspur Colo May 11, black cds on circa 1872 cover to Castle Rock, C.T. franked with 3¢ Bank Note tied by target cancel, slightly reduced at left, F.-V.F., Larkspur was located on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, about halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs.

Larkspur Colo, May 9 1873, bold, clear manuscript postmark ties 3¢ green Banknote on cover to Vermont, Very Fine and scarce, This small office was previously called Huntsville, but no Huntsville covers are recorded.

Las Animas Colo. Aug 2, black cds on cover to Kansas franked with 3¢ Bank Note (toned perfs) with manuscript & target cancels, few tiny toned spots, F.-V.F.

The Las Animas post office opened in 1871. The town flourished until 1874, when it was bypassed by the Kansas Pacific Railroad. A new town called Las Animas grew up at the railhead, and the original became East Las Animas.

This resort, also known as Manitou Springs, was a popular destination in the 1870s and 1880s., Very Fine and attractive, illustrated in Jarrett's Colorado book.
