Confederacy, Brownsville, Tex, Apr 25, 1865, rimless cds on fresh folded letter from Mexico datelined "Matamoros, 23 April 1865" with manuscript "Paid 30" for triple rate, addressed to San Antonio, Texas and carried by courier with "Maza y Larrache, Matamoros, Apr 23, 1865" unlisted forwarder's circular date stamp struck twice, interesting contents (in Spanish), I need to bother you begging you to deliver the enclosed (letters) to their addressee's, please rush the one I enclose for Bustamante sending it to wherever he may be, if he is not there as on that letter tell him about the urgent need to send all the cotton to Piedras Negras in view of what is lately happening in the South. After Richmond was taken, we received news of Lee's surrender together with most of his army…, Very Fine, a wonderful cross border usage from Mexico shortly after General Lee's surrender of the Confederacy on April 9.

Barrett, Melrose, Nacogdoches Co., Texas on folded letter from Matthew Burke who is asking to be detailed as his clerk, Burke says, "I would not be so solicitous about it, but my health is so poor that I do not think I will be able for service in the field soon", Very Fine and choice, pristine, Scarce Texas use.

P.M." at lower left; part of top back flap missing and small edge tears at top, Very Fine and rare, this is the listing cover for the 1986 New Dietz; most interesting original letter from Leon Springs postmaster H. Aue to Honl Chief Justice of Bexar County describing the sudden death of a steamboat captain of consumption/apoplexy at his home and requesting he be granted letters of administration to deal with his effects.
