Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, "Pronounced Freak" printing, left stamp in horizontal pair, ample to large margins, tied by blue Columbia, S.C., Jan 14 cds on 1863 folded letter sheet to Shelton P.O., S.C.; each stamp small edge nick and folded letter missing bottom part of sheet, otherwise Very Fine, a wonderful and unique printing error, quoted by Dietz as being "one of the most interesting and intriguing things I've yet come across"; with 1946 letter of comments from Dietz.Scott No. 7 var. This stamp has found it's place in The New Dietz catalog under the printing errors and oddities section (pg 143). Entitled "A Pronounced Freak", Dietz suggests an explanation of that during the removal of a freshly printed sheet of stamps this area was somehow smeared creating this unusual effect.
