Redwood City, Cal. (San Mateo). Bold double circle postmark on lemon cover to Ohio franked with two 1861-66 2¢ Blackjacks (one with tiny corner bend) with indistinct cancel, slightly reduced at right, Very Fine and attractive, a scarce California usage.

1853 Richard Howe document. Appointing agent (B Wade) for contact service of surveying the Meridian and other lines south of the base line in the state of California and with reverse directing Treasurer of the U.S. to pay him for services rendered (no photo).

An engineer who supervised the completion of the Ohio & Erie Canal from Cleveland to Massillon, Ohio from 1825-1832 and led a group of Akron residents to California to search for gold in 1850.

Rough and Ready, Cal. (Nevada). Manuscript postmark on 1853 cover to New York with manuscript "paid 6" rate (crossed out) at right, handstamped with red two line "Steamer Winfield Scott" handstamp, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Carried on the final voyage of the "Winfield Scott", which was wrecked off the California coast on December 1, 1853.
