1847, 5¢ red brown, double transfer (type "B"). Position 90R1, showing double transfer of top and bottom frame lines, right margin single with large margins to just shaving frameline at upper left, manuscript cancelled and just tied by red "5" handstamp in margin on 1850 cover to Freiwaldau, Germany, blue "Baltimore, Md., Nov 11" cds and endorsed "via Berlin" at bottom, reverse with red English transit date stamp and "America per England" boxed handstamp, with original enclosure including newspaper clipping; light cover edge wear, central wax seal stain and partially reinforced backflap, F.-V.F., ex Brown; signed Ashbrook, with 1995 P.F. certificate.

Lot 983    

1847, 5¢ red brown. Large margins to just in at top, manuscript cancelled on buff cover with attractive strike of "Lebanon, Ten." cds in red, cover with minor corner wear, F.-V.F., a very scarce usage of a 5¢ 1847 Issue from Tennessee, only 26 5¢ 1847 covers are recorded in the Alexander census, of which 15 are used from Nashville and seven from Jackson, leaving four covers used from the rest of the state, this cover from Lebanon is unrecorded in the census and the only one known.
