Confederacy, Plains of Dura, Ga., 1861, 10¢ black. "Paid" handstamp with manuscript "10" rate with "A.B.N." the Postmaster's initials (Athern B. Hawkes) as a control marking on cover with military address to Richmond & "Plains of Dura, Ga./Aug. 12" corrected by manuscript to the 15th, large cover repair at top affecting postmark, cover open at top & bottom, Very Fine appearance.

Confederacy, Ringgold, Ga., 1861, 5¢ blue black. A gorgeous strike of this fancy Provisional handstamp with bold "Ringgold, Ga./Oct. 24" (1861) cds on cover to Hamilton, Geo., Extremely Fine and choice, Ex-Caspary & Judd.

This is undoubtedly the finest known example of this desirable Postmasters' Provisional, with Judd's notation in pencil on reverse which reads, "Probably the finest known copy known. A showpiece & very rare"

It is interesting to note that this cover (2009 Cat. $3000) sold for $350 in the 1956 Caspary sale and the following lot in that sale, lot 444, the Unique "Rutherfordton, N.C." Postmasters' Provisional (2009 Cat. $25,000) sold for $450.

Confederacy, Sandersville, Ga. Blue cds tying 1863-64 10¢ blue over a blue handstamped "10" of Sandersville with straight line "Paid" alongside on small ladies cover to Atlanta, the stamp has been subsequently moved & with left margin added, flap repaired & small mend at top, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This usage indicates the handstamped "Paid 10" marking was applied prior to its intended use and is this provisional in nature.

Confederacy, Savannah, Ga., 1861, 5¢ black. Neatly struck Provisional rate and control handstamps on cover used from Milledgeville to "Maj. C.H. Olmstead, Camp Morgan, Tybee Island", the Savannah "Paid 5" Provisional handstamp has been cancelled by grid with "Milledgeville, Ga./Aug. 4" cds applied with straight line "Paid" handstamp & "10" rate handstamp which was cancelled by grid & corrected with "5" rate handstamp, Extremely Fine, ex-MacBride with his notes on reverse; signed Dietz.

Light strike of "Paid 5" handstamp over struck with bold "Paid 10" Provisional handstamp with "Savannah, Ga./Nov. 7, 1861/Paid" cds on cover to "Vice President Stephens" in Richmond, docketing on reverse indicates that the sender has been discharged & is looking to form a new Company & that he would like to join Prince Polignac's Legion, minor abrasion on front of cover, slightly reduced at top & flap missing, Very Fine.
