Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, Early Usage on Cover. Large margins to just touching at top right, tied by "Richmond, Va./Oct. 17, 1861" cds on cover to Sangersville, Va., pinpoint piece of foreign matter impression into stamp at time of cancelling, Very Fine.

The earliest known postmark on a Confederate States #1 is Oct. the 16th.

Lot 2863    

Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, Stone 1, Earliest Known Usage. Vert. pair tied by two strikes of "Richmond, Va./Oct. 18, 1861" cds on lemon cover to Mobile, Ala., cover repair at top, Very Fine, One of the Most Important Covers of this Magnificent Collection; with 1973, 1987 P.F. certificates and 1993 C.S.A. certificate.
Scott No. 1    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

The New Postage Stamp: A very large number of the new Confederate postage stamps were disposed of yesterday at the Richmond post-office. Their introduction supplies a want which has heretofore seriously taxed the public endurance. The stamps are of the size of those in use by the United States Government, are colored green and ornamented with a very excellent bust of President Davis. As written in the Richmond Daily Dispatch, Oct. 17, 1861.

Left margin single, ample margin to just in at lower right, tied by bold "Richmond, Va., Feb 28, 1862" cds on cover to Raleigh, N.C., Very Fine, This was the earliest known usage for many years, the earliest known date today is recorded as Feb. 26, 1862; with 1983 P.F. certificate.

Confederacy, First Day of the 1862 10¢ Rate - Fincastle, Va./Jul. 1 (1862). Cds on cover to Connards Store, Va. franked with 1861 5¢ green + 1862 5¢ blue cancelled by grid cancels, 5¢ blue tied, endorsed at bottom left "Notice that boy Fontaine has been arrested", undoubtedly referring to a captured runaway slave, adhesive with mostly large margins, 5¢ blue with small tear, flap missing, Very Fine, a wonderful combination showing the new 10¢ rate.
