Lot 2501    

Confederacy, Howell Cobb/Brig. Genl./C.S.A. Manuscript free frank on brown cover to his wife in Athens, some minor wrinkles, Very Fine.
Estimate    $75 - 100.

Cobb was Governor of Georgia (1851-1853) and served as Buchanan's Secretary of the Treasury from 1857 to December 10, 1860, when he resigned. Cobb personally opposed secession. He was Chairman of the convention of delegates from the seceded states, which assembled in Montgomery, Alabama on February 24, 1861 to form a Confederate government. In July 1861, Cobb accepted a commission as Colonel in the Confederate Army and was later commissioned a Major General. He saw action at Shiloh and Antietam and surrendered at Macon, Georgia on April 20, 1864.

Confederacy, R.E. Lee, Genl. Manuscript free frank on field letter addressed in his hand to "Wm. C. Jackson, Augusta, Georgia", carried by Military courier to Richmond where it was forwarded to Augusta with 1863 10¢ blue tied by "Richmond, Va." cds, adhesive with some gum staining & minor faults, Very Fine and rare; signed with Weill handstamp.
Estimate    $7,500 - 10,000.

One of the very few Robert E. Lee Field Letters forwarded through the Post Office.

Confederacy, "Savannah, Ga./Jan. 19, 1861" First Day of Independent States Usage. Neat postmark with grid on 1860-61 3¢ Star Die Entire to Macon, Ga., Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

A wonderful first day cover which is very rare as Georgia was an independent State for only 16 days between Jan. 19 - Feb. 4, 1861.

Confederacy, "Savannah, Ga./Jan. 19, 1861" First Day of Independent States Usage. Cds with "10" rate handstamp on cover to Nova Scotia with "U. States" exchange marking in arc, backstamped with Halifax transit oval handstamp, Very Fine.

A very rare usage to a foreign destination and a wonderful first day cover. This is very rare as Georgia was an independent State for only 16 days between Jan. 19 - Feb. 4, 1861.

Confederacy, Macon, Ga./May 31 (1861), Last Day of Usage of United States Stamps in Confederacy. Three strikes of double circle postmark tying three 1857 1¢ blue, type V on cover with lovely green embossed cameo corner card of the "Lanier House" in Macon, cover addressed to "A.H. Stephens" (Vice President) in Richmond, docketed on reverse "L.C. Belt, Captain of the Toombs Guards writes from Macon, Ga. May 31, 1861 requesting Mr. Stephens to have a Regiment of Ga. troops ordered to Virginia that his company may go. Says Gov. Brown will arm them.", cover lightly clean & some minor edge restoration, lovely Very Fine appearance, a very scarce last day of usage, ex-Knapp, MacBride.

Bold blue cds with matching "Paid 10" handstamp on all over shaded advertising cover in gray for "The Hartford Fire Insurance Co.", cover addressed to "A.H. Stephens, V.Pr." (Vice President) in Richmond, docketed on reverse "D. A. Vason, Albany Georgia, June 1st, 1861/His son, Wm. I Vason wants it arranged so that he may be stationed where his wife may be with him or where he can visit her.", for some reason the cover is additionally postmarked with black "Richmond, Va./Sep. 16, 1861" cds & straight line "Paid" in italics, flap missing, Extremely Fine, a very rare first day of usage.

Confederacy, 1857 3¢ dull red. Tied by "Dalton, Ga./May 2, 1861" cds on small cover with 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (Dietz F7-5) in red, white and blue, addressed to Tuscumbia, Ala., most of flap torn away, Extremely Fine; with 1976 P.F. certificate.

A Wonderful Seven Star Patriotic Flag design used during the Independent Statehood period. The Seven Star design represents the original six states which formed the Confederacy on Feb. 4, 1861 and the seventh state, Texas, which had indicated its intention to secede.
