Lot 3011    

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ light blue, De La Rue printing. Horiz. pair, four large margins (left stamp with wrinkles), tied "Sumter, S.C./Jun 24" cds in lower left hand corner of forwarded cover to Charleston, S.C. where crossed out and forwarded to Camden with 10¢ blue (#11, slightly cut in) tied by neat "Charleston, S.C./Jun 27" cds at upper right, addressed c/o H.A. DeSaussure, the son of Gen. Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure, small ink erosion spot, Very Fine and attractive.

DeSaussure was the son of Gen. Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure. After the U. S. Army evacuated Fort Moultrie in 1861, Gen. DeSaussure was placed in charge of the abandoned fortress. At the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Confederate military forces, he was in command of artillery on Cummings Point. He later took command of the Fourth Brigade, South Carolina Militia, and held this position to the close of the War. He commanded the force of reserves, which engaged in the defense of Charleston, and was appointed Adjutant General of South Carolina.

Horiz. pair, ample to large margins, tied by "Montgomery, Ala., Sep 4, 1862" cds on cover forwarded to Macon, Ga., "Indian Springs, Ga., Sep 12, 1862" forwarding postmark and manuscript "Due 10"; pair with trivial tone spot in left margin, Very Fine; with 2009 P.F. certificate.

College, Va./Feb. 3, '63" postmark addressed to "Chaplain 2nd Reg. Va. Vols, Gen'l Paxton's Brigade, Gen'l T.I. Jackson's, Army of the Valley of Va.", inside usage franked with second 1862 5¢ blue horizontal. pair (large margins, right stamp light crease) tied by blue "Petersburg, Va.Jan. 6" cds used to Hampden Sydney P.O., Va., one original sideflap detached & hinged in place, Very Fine.

Defective single, tied by "Charleston, S.C./Jun. 17" cds on buff cover to Clinton, Laurens Railroad, S.C., cover forwarded to Martins Depot with second 5¢ blue (close to large margins) tied by balloon type cds of "Clinton, S.C./Jun. 10" (error in date slug), Very Fine.

Most unusual to see a cover with two single use of the Confederate States 5¢ London prints used prior to the rate change. One used to pay the primary postage and one used to pay the forwarding postage.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ light blue, De La Rue printing. Frameline just shaved at top, otherwise large margins light crease, tied by "Camden, Ala./Jun. 27" (1862) cds on overpaid drop cover, flap missing & couple small cover tears`, F.-V.F.

The cover addressed to Col. James Chesnut, who later became a Brigadier General Chesnut (1815 - 85) was a lawyer and politician, who later became a U.S. Senator from South Carolina. He served in the Senate from 1858 until South Carolina's secession from the Union in 1860. Once the Civil War broke out, James Chesnut, Jr. became an aide to President Jefferson Davis and was commissioned a brigadier general in the Confederate Army.

Chesnut was married to Mary Miller (1823 - 1886) who was a South Carolina author noted for writing a sophisticated diary describing the American Civil War and her upper class circles of Southern society. In 1981 the historian C. Vann Woodward completed his annotated edition of the diary, which was republished under the title Mary Chesnut's Civil War. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982.
