Wells, Fargo & Co./Eureka, HB. Bold blue handstamp on 3¢ pink entire with company frank to Washington, D.C., entered the mails with New York cds & grid, addressed to "Col. S.G. Whipple, Care of Hon. John Bidwell M.C.", small nick at right & tear on reverse, Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

John Bidwell, was an early California pioneer and important politician. He was one of the first to cross the Rockies and Sierras with the first overland expedition, arriving in the Sacramento Valley, California, on November 4, 1841. Bidwell's political career was long and varied which included a member of the State senate in 1849; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1867); unsuccessful candidate for Governor of California in 1875 on the Anti-Monopoly ticket and was the unsuccessful candidate of that party for Governor of California in 1890 and for President of the United States in 1892.

Violet oval agent name date stamp (similar to Leutzinger type 24-4) with manuscript "Paid" above used as Provisional frank with second strike canceling on 2¢ green entire to St. Louis, Mo., additionally franked with 2¢ green Bank Note & tied by "Ogden & San Fran. R.P.O." cds, Very Fine, a rare and perhaps unique provisional frank usage prior to the Santa Barbara 1894 Pullman railroad strike provisional.
