(Denver & Rio Grande/Wells, Fargo & Co.) in six pointed star in violet, cover carried to Chicago where it entered the mails, small cover tear at top, Very Fine, a very rare & unusual Colorado item.

Hinckley & Co.'s Express/Denver City. Large black circular handstamp dated April 9, 1861, on 3¢ Star Die entire with blue St. Joseph, Mo., cds, to Wisconsin, black printed company frank at left, couple closed tears at top, almost Very Fine appearance.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Hinckley & Co.'s Express was started in 1860 by C. S. Hinckley and John A. Sowers, serving mining camps in present-day Colorado and Nebraska Territory. They were bought out by the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Co. in May 1861. This example of Hinckley's printed frank is noteworthy for error in spelling "Hickley" at top.
