Lot 701    

Bannack City Express. Full strike of tombstone handstamp on homemade cover address to Fort Bridger, U.T., entered the mails with "Salt Lake City, U.T., Jun 8" cds and matching grid handstamps canceling 1861 1¢ blue, strip of three + 3¢ rose (defects); restored cover tears and edge wears, Fine appearance, a very scarce usage.

Lot 702    

Bannack City Express. Semi-circle black handstamp with magenta manuscript "c.o.d", on cover to Bannack City, Idaho, franked with grid cancelled 1861 3¢ rose tied by grid with "Cleveland, O." originating postmark, edge wear and couple small tears, F.-V.F. and rare.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The Bannack City Express provided service between Virginia City, Bannack City, Montana and Salt Lake City, from 1864 to 1866, when it was acquired by Ben Holladay.

Holladay Overland Mail & Express Co. Bold Paid frank on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, full clear blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Helena, Montana, Sep 8, 1867" cds, with original enclosure, Extremely Fine, a lovely usage of the Holladay frank after Wells Fargo had taken over Holladay in 1866.

C.C. Huntley, Stage and Express Line. Gold & red printed company frank on 3¢ pink entire, "Helena, Montano (sic)" cds, to Philadelphia, cover with tears and some aging, F.-V.F., a very rare Express company, of which this is only second example known to us.

A.J. Oliver & Co.'s Bannock and Salt Lake City Express. Clear oval express company marking, mis-spells "Bannack", on yellow 1863 cover franked with target cancelled 3¢ rose with Washington, D.C. cds, to "Virginia City, Idaho Terr., via Great Salt Lake City, Utah Terr.", with wordy letter contents, reduced at right with rough opening, otherwise fresh and Very Fine, very rare.

A.J. Oliver & Co.'s, Bannock and Salt Lake Express. Faint strike at top left of oval handstamp on target cancelled 3¢ pink entire to Denver, Col. Ter., carried from Bannack City and then down to Salt Lake City with "T.D. Brown, Agent, G. S.L. City" handstamp applied upon arrival, Brown placing cover into the mails with "Salt Lake City, Apr. 5, 64" double circle target duplex, entire additionally with blue "Denver City. Col.Advertised" double circle postmark, with edge wear, Fine and rare.
